'73 info needed...
One of my best friends, Dale Tate wants a 1873 Winchester (or clone) in 44 Special. I don't think such a thing was ever made. Was it made commercially? Could it be made custom? What else is out there?

Re: '73 info needed...
For sure not an original but I would think U could get one in Uberti. As far as custom, what would they have to do- open the chamber a little? How much hotter is a 44 spl than 45 colt. cause I know one can be had in 45 c.

Uberti lists them but they are a scarce as hen's teeth.
You're more likely to come with a 44mag (only made in blued carbines) which could use the special if a bullet with sufficient length was used to give similar OAL to the mag.

Cimarron Firearms in Fredericksburg, TX. lists several different models of the '73 in 44 Special.
Re: '73 info needed...
A friend has a .44 Sp Cimarron (Uberti) carbine in its "original" (antiqued) finish I located new no problem for him two years ago. Fabulous gun.
Re: '73 info needed...
If he wants a .44 Special, maybe he might want a .44 Magnum even more. Who would have thought such a thing were possible? But evidently it is, from a factory.

That would be interesting. Guess I would buy a few spare toggle links.

I don't know that a Chaparral would be suitable for a shooter. Very few have been sold, if they were better quality than their 1876, few reports of such exist.
Cimarron has nice finishes available. I don't care for the "original" finish, and their charcoal blue is rather fragile; but quite pretty when new, (wears quickly).

I had wondered about that. Now I know... And I have always thought that finish was real purty.
Is charcoal blue thin only on the Cimarron or is that the nature of that finish on other guns too?

The "regular" blue seems to be ok from what I've seen of others' but I don't have personal experience with.smokenrust wrote:"and their charcoal blue is rather fragile; but quite pretty when new, (wears quickly)."

It is the nature of the finish. Basically it's just polished metal heated to a blue color. So, it is very thin and wears off quickly if handled.
Joe,
The Uberti 73 and the 66 too, can be ordered in 44spec. It just takes time to get one. But, you might give Cimarron a call. They sometimes have them in stock.
