Since you have 3 94's already, I'd pass on the post 64 Winnie and go for the Marlin. I'm a Winchester kind of guy myself, but am unimpressed with the early post 64 94's I have seen. I think I'd want the Marlin just for variety if nothing else, but the Marlin guys LOVE their Marlins. Try it you might like it!

1968 makes the Model 94 a post-64 before the 1970 upgrades from the previous stamped ligter & roll pins, etc, AND it has the sintered metal receiver that's very hard to refinish needs be - so I'd pass in favor of the Marlin Texan in a heartbeat.

That straight grip Marlin sounds like a winner. Keep her real clean inside as they jam more than a Wrenchester.

Straight grip Marlins are a rare bird and IMHO the late 60s 94 are the worst 94s. Another vote for Marlin.

I'd take the Marlin way before a '68 Winchester. 1965 to the early '80s weren't the best for Winchester!

A Win guy, but another +1 for the "Marlin in a heatbeat." The mid-late 60s Win 94s were atrocious. Some say they shoot fine,..fine, but they're fugly and IMO not worthy of ownership except if given one, I'd strip/antique it (so I could bear looking at it :) ) and throw it in the truck or the corner of the cabin as a back-up.

Wise choice. Those mid to late 60's 94's just don't do it for me.

I'm late to this thread, but I'll make it unanimous for the Marlin.
I too prefer Win 94s but I've also wanted a straight stock Marlin carbine for a long time.

I think the straight stock makes the Marlin look great. A thin forearm would make it even nicer. When did Marlin make the fat forearm standard?

Did I mention I don't like fat forearms on a levergun?

Please post pictures when you get it in. I have personally never seen a Marlin 336 30/30 with a straight grip stock in person.

This is how I'd want a 336 to look, an old 93:

IOW - like a proper Pre War Winchester :)

Here you go. Just needs a little TLC, different scope and mounts but over all not bad, strong rifleing. No defects on blueing.

aggghhh --- the dreaded super tall see-thru rings !  Those seem to be standard issue for every other levergun from the 70's/80's i have seen on a used rack if they had an optic.

The rifle looks great though ! nice score
