Any must see things in lost wages Nevada?

Post by Alan Wood »

Took off on vacation a week ago last Friday with the only planned stop being my sister and brother in laws for my parents 50th anniversary which was Saturday. Any way I find myself in down town Vegas and 6 days till I need to be back at work in Sacramento. So is there any must see things here other than the Casinos? Yeah I know it might have been better to plan this out from scratch but so far it has been pretty interesting and I probably would have changed the plan due to road work several times by now.

Red Rock Canyon is about an hour out & is a nice ride through.

The best day I ever spent in Las Vegas was traveling up to Brice Canyon, Utah!
The ride up there was about 4.5 hours IIRC, spent about 4 hours up there and then back.
The temperature was over 110 in LV; in the hills between LV and the canyon the temp dropped down to below 50; saw elk, mule deer & a bobcat.

I'll vote for the dam as well. It's even more impressive when you consider the state of technology at the time it was built. The Neon Museum is pretty interesting as well.

Plus, consider the politics of the time. Today, you would not be able to build that dam. OSHA, Government bureaucrats, environmental whackos, legions of lawyers for every group of kooks in the country would keep it in court for a century

Tis true. These days the greenie wackos are forcing some hydroelectric dams to be removed. At the same time, our electricity demand is rising. I say, if we run out of power, the greenie wackos be the first to have their power shut down. They could be on some sort of list. Hot day, high demand, shut off their AC's.

I haven't had a chance to see it yet, but I understand that Valley of Fires State Park is worth a visit:

Nother vote for the dam. My Great Grandad and my Great Uncles helped build it so I always try to stop there when I am in the area.

Useless fact of the day. They installed coolant lines throughout the concrete to facilitate the proper curing of the structure. At the core, the temp is still quite warm, as it has not completely finished curing.

The Atomic Museum.

The Steakhouse inside Circus Circus.

And the beach at the Hard Rock. Any morning about 10AM...

I think you should go to the PAWN Shop and visit with Chumley.

I live at cedar city utah. 3 hours NE of vegas on I-15. Bryce, zion and cedar breaks national parks are all less than a hour from me. The elevations run from 3,000 feet to 11,000 feet. Great scenery and like 20 to 40 degrees cooler than vegas. A nice closer place to see 165 miles NE of vegas on highway 93 is Pinoche. At one time it was said to be the wildest, bloodest town in the west. Its a old mineing camp with a lot to see. It has a large boot hill. Kind ov like a smaller virginnia city. 20 miles east of that is spring valley, a scenic state park.

Thank you all. As you may have surmised from my original post I had not planned on being in Vegas Last night or I would have asked earlier. I had originally planned on stopping about 100 miles earlier but didn't care for the lodging options available. That was probably a mistake. As it is it was so hot when I woke up that I decided to leave Vegas. I was surprised just how hot it was so early. Guess I am kind of spoiled living in Sacramento where it is very rare for it not to get below 80 at night. Anyway upshot is that I got on the road and drove to California state highway 395 to see the sights on the east side of the Sierra Nevada.
As a side note seeing the quality of drivers in general on this trip really really makes me apreciate my 8 minutes by back roads daily commute!

Sorry I didn't see this earlier, but one of the best drives (I like it in the spring time - April especially), is leave LV on NV160, headed toward Pahrump, then left on 373 into CA onto CA178 to Shoshone, turn right onto CA127 into Death Valley, take CA190 north to Scotty's Castle Road to visit the Castle. Come back to CA190 and take it west across the Panamint Valley and then CA136 around Owens Lake before joining up with US395 for the drive up US 395. Make sure you take the CA158 (June Lake Loop). North of Bishop. And for a treat, take CA120 over the divide vs. US50. You'll come out to CA99 at Manteca.

Thank you all again. I will be book marking this thread for suggestions about future vacations. Odd thing is that the recent changes at work make it likely that I will be taking more time off not less. :) All of the suggestions sound interesting in and of themselves! However looking at my bank account balance the rest of this vacation is a stay-cation financially at least. That being said things went pretty well outside of the camera. :( I thought that it used a standard USB cable to charge etc. It doesn't and it's battery was dead when I needed it. Oh well at least now I know about that. Great camera overall but it failed me at my parent's 50th anniversary because it doesn't use standard connectors even thought it appears to (at least with my 49 year old eyesight).

My wife treated me to a trip to Vegas for my 50th B-day. I'm not much of a gambler, but I did want to see the desert, so we took day trips. The trip to see the Hoover Dam and then the Valley of Fire was fantastic.

I'm going back in March and hope to see some of the other places mentioned in this thread.
