Found a nice early 39-A
Tonight I stopped by the gunshop and there sat a nice 39-A. Gunshop owner told me that this was a rare one, he called it a "Pre-Mountie". Serial number K2283* (1953 Mfg.) 24" barrel, (Barrel is marked 39-A, no "Mountie" marking). Straight stock. On the receiver is a Lyman receiver sight, all steel. Price was $50 higher than a new Model 39 would cost me today and I think I got a real deal. Condition is 98% with a little finish wear on the forend where your fingers would grip it. Will rub a coat of some kind of finish into that. Ballard rifling. He noted that there were 4335 of this model manufactured.
Other than these basic facts, can anyone tell me where this rifle fits into the scheme of things? Fired a couple of rounds through it and it functions nicely. Dealer acted like he did not want to sell it. Thanks!

You have one of the "Holy Grail's", of 39A's. It is the original "Mountie". Don't screw with it. Leave the finish alone and enjoy it. If you paid under $700 and it's really 98% condition you did real well.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.
Re: Found a nice early 39-A
Nice purchase! The '53 39-A Mounties had 24" barrels, ballard rifling, a thin forearm and no markings calling them Mountie. You have yourself a gen u wine 1st edition Mountie. Take some pics, post them and then go shoot the dicken's out of her.
Kind regards,
Tycer

Re: Found a nice early 39-A
To answer another post: The rifle cost me $600 plus $33 sales tax. The metal is 99% and the only part that shows normal 59 year old handling and use is the wood, but only in a couple of small spots you really have to look for. The Lyman receiver sight is mounted in the holes that are drilled and tapped by the factory. The forend is thin. It has not been messed with. Lubed it up with TriFlow and rubbed it into the metal. Looks even better now! I have two rifles I need to photo...

Howdy, GregT,
Nice find! And that receiver sight is probably a Lyman 56 and worth $150 or more. Sweet!

Congratulations on a GREAT find, $50 more than a crappy new Remlin is a steal especially with the Lyman peep included.GregT wrote:Price was $50 higher than a new Model 39 would cost me today and I think I got a real deal.

Are the 66's worth any cash outside of their utility value?Cimarron Red wrote:And the sight is a model 66 MC.

streetstar,
The all-steel M66's for more popular rifles will bring $150 and up, depending on condition.
