Range Trip 9-12-12

Post by 6pt-sika »

Slept late today so I didn't get to the range before 1PM !

Took a pair of Ruger #1B's in 264 WIN MAG and 270 Weatherby Mag , also my Savage 10ML-II 50 cal and our Kettner drilling thats 16-16 and 10.75x65R Collath .

Shot the drilling first , only had nine rounds loaded for it since I only have 9 pieces of brass !

Image

Shot the Ruger #1B 270 Weatherby with both Federal factory 130 Sierra loads and Weatherby factory loads with a 150 spire point . Both hit okay for hunting purposes with the same sight in !

The averages of four shots of each are the following ,

Federal factory with the 130 Sierra 3152 FPS

Weatherby factory with 150 spire point in what they call "ultra velocity"
1st 4 shots avg 3209 FPS
2nd 4 shots avg 3236 FPS

Worked with the Savage ML10 some more with both the Hornady 250 SST and the TC 250 Shockwave both being pushed with 42 grains of VV N-110 .

Now the results with the Ruger #1B 264 WIN MAG with an older Leupold Vari XIII 4.5-14xAO all shot at 100 yards . Velocities written on targets are the average of the 3 shots in each group !

First group out of a cold clean barrel !

Image

Second group out of a cooled fouled barrel .

Image

Third group out of a cooled fouled barrel . This was the best group with IMR4831 , also the hottest .

Image

The fourth group out of a cooled fouled barrel and also the first group with RL22 .

Image

The second group fired with RL22 and again from a cooled fouled barrel .

Image

And finally the last group I fired in the 264 WIN MAG and the hottest load with RL22 . I never cleaned the barrel for the entire 18 shots . Typically I would have fired a fouler , shot the 3 groups with IMR4831 , cleaned the barrel . Fouled it again and then shot the 3 groups of RL22 . But today I forgot my cleaning solvents !
After looking at the end result (atleast for today) it doesn't look all that detrimental !

Image

Next week I'll shoot the 264 WIN MAG some more with the Berger 130 VLD . This time with IMR4831 with charges of 61 and 62 grains . I'll also shoot it with RL22 and charges of 62 , 63 and 64 grains .

Cool , does he shoot it any ?

We actually have four drillings !

My mom gave my pop one for Xmas maybe 30 years ago that was 16-16 and 8mm however this one is the 8mm thats measures .318" instead of .323" and it's also a hammer gun.

Have a Kerner thats 16-16 and 7x57R , a J.P.Sauer thats 12 -12 and 7x57R (this one was made in the mid 50's to mid 60's) . And kinda on a side note we picked up a combo gun about this time last year , it's an Antonio Zoli in 12 gauge and 7x57R .

I need to get some 7x57R brass . At the moment I have maybe 9 pieces of brass and maybe 9 factory loaded RWS rounds . Have 7x57 dies so reloading is a non isuue , but maybe 20-30 pieces more of brass would be great !
Also wouldn't mind picking up 10-12 more pieces of 405 WIN brass to work over for the 10.75x65R !

Yeah it didn't go !

Mystreiousely yesterday after we got the gun fitted in the stock and I thought ready to go I decided to check the trigger pull !

Before all this started I had a very nice 10-12 ounce trigger in that gun . When I checked it yesterday it was almost 3 pounds . My gunsmith buddy said he could fix it in 5 minutes and I defferred since he was the one that got it to work okay at 10-12 ounces . I told him if he could he could go as low as 8 ounces . Anyway he F'd with it for awhile and never could get it to break consistently with no creep and without the sear dropping . So he's gonna F with it some more today .

Kind of a bummer as I was all prepared yesterday to come home and load maybe 30 rounds for that one as well .

Hopefully if my bud can get the trigger on the 222 to my liking next wednesday I'll take the 222 HB , the 264 WIN MAG , the 10.75x65R Collath and my Savage 10ML-II 50 cal .

I am finding four to be about the perfect number for me at the range now !

Gives me enough to keep me occupied for awhile and not enough to get me worn out after it's all done .

Personally 2 hours at the range is plenty for me at one sitting .

Although I may go back out tommorrow afternoon for a round or two of skeet and then for the club officers election . Wish we were voting on the Prez and Vice Prez , the ones we have now remind me of the Black Cloud in the White House and Biden . But atleast we can hopefully get one numbskull off the board of directors .

I just got off the phone with a friend thats shooting the Berger 30 cal 155 gr VLD in his 300 WIN MAG .
I told him about my groups from today .

Now after sitting back and thinking a bit I might just change over all my #1's in deer calibers that they make Hunting VLD's for !

243 WIN , 6mm REM , 257 Roberts , 25-06 , 270 WIN , 270 Weatherby , 280 REM , 7mm Rem Mag , 300 Win Mag and 300 Weatherby Mag .

Wish they made one in .338 that was about 200-225 grains !
