And here I thought this would be a pic of a mountain lion in a tree. Not sure which is worse.
Re: Something you hope never to see overhead...
That's nothing, I remember looking up early one morning and seeing what must have been about 30 or more Turkey Vultures circleing in tight formation riding a thermal heading out to look for dead stuff. Wish I had a camera then, it surely was something to see. There's a bunch of really tall trees about a mile north of me where they like to roost at night. It's kinda neat seeing them glide over in the evening going back home.

My very white, fat brother was floating very still with a snorkel in a bay in Akumal, Mexico watching the beautiful fish. A vulture thought he looked like food and was making a bee-line landing on that new snack. Tom moved when the bird was about four feet above him and I caught a picture of the big bird pulling up in surprise. Tom had no idea. I about wet myself telling and re-telling that story to our hosts. Still cracks me up!
Kind regards,

We fed vultures for years.Wife bakes chicken every Thursday and pulls the skin off the pieces and then puts the skins on a laid over tree in our backyard then several vultures and crows and hawks compete for the pickings.......One winter the whole flock of 75 or more vultures roosted some nights in the trees behind our house....We like them things.

Not many cowboys but a lot of settlers when the Indains attacted the wagon train.pwl44m wrote:I remember those in the old Cowboys. The Music would play and the Buzzards would Circle which Led Them to the wounded Cowboy every time. I'm trying to remember itf there was ever any Dead Cowboys.

If you are really in trouble, are you going to see them?

When I was a kid, probably 5 or 6 years old, I always wanted to catch a turkey buzzard. I would go out in the hay field, making myself bait, and lay there still as can be when I saw them circling. Not sure what I would have done if one actually decided to check me out.

I don't worry when I see them riding a thermal, but these guys were on the ground in the county road that runs along my fence line. I stopped to see what they were interested in, but didn't find anything. My place is open country there, nothing in the road and nothing in the short grass on the other side. No smell either.

I saw a few when I was in Tombstone, I guess with all the illegals that die in the desert they recognise people as potential food, better to keep moving!

When I was a kid shooting groundhogs the turkey vultures seemed to tune in on varmint hunters. Wow, they can really rip and tear a varmint to pieces quick!
Re: Something you hope never to see overhead...
Looks like the fall migration is on. When I went out to the mail box this afternoon There were several circling of both species, the Black, and the Turkey Vulture. Grabbed the camera and went back out and took a few shots.
