First grips off of my duplicator
I posted a pic of my little duplicator a couple weeks ago.
Well I finally got the first set done.
I have two more sets almost ready for finish now.
These are of Zebra wood from Africa.
A fairly soft wood but different.
Poor pictures due to much glare. I need a soft white bulb instead of that thing compact florescent.

Re: First grips off of my duplicator
M. M. Wright , The Z axis is just a pair of pillow block bearings
like the ones on the left. They slide on the horizontal shaft and also rock to give up and down motion to the stylus and cutter.
two bit okie , The duplicator is my doing. I made it up out of mostly scrap pieces I had in my scrap box along with a piece of 3/4" drill rod and some pillow block bearings I got of off Amazon.
pwl44m, I used True oil. Five coats but they needed to have more coats to completely fill the pores.I was kinda in a rush
to get to the next set.
They could be stained or died to make them darker.
If I want darker I usually choose darker wood to begin with.
Thanks for the compliments guys.
I think these would really stand out on a blued gun.
More to come.

Nicely done! Nothing like making your own rig and then using it to make your own grip scales!

Re: First grips off of my duplicator
pwl44m ,Perry, Your comment got me to thinking ( not allays a good thing for me, it causes lots more work quite often)
I took the next two sets I have been making out of that Zebra wood and gave them a coat of Herter`s French Red stain.
They are coming out real nice ,almost the color Winchester used on early levers. They still have the cool stripes very pronounced with some honey colored cast in some areas.
I will post some pics in a few days.
They will get at least 10 coats of True Oil and a good rubbing.
That takes some time to do.

Re: First grips off of my duplicator
Can't wait to see them.
I once reclaimed an M1 Carbine stock. I scraped it head to toe with a piece of glass then sanded it smooth. Then every nite when I got home from work I would rub true Oil with My fingers. I don't remember how many coats I put on but it was a lot. It turned out beautiful. I took it to Gun Show some years later and Noone liked it, too Purty. One Guy even said He could beat it with a hammer to make it look right- go figger.

Re: First grips off of my duplicator
I wish there were stores you could actually go to that sold stuff like "pillow block bearings" - when I try to find stuff like that locally, I just get blank stares and comments like "I don't think they make anything like that..."
Buying something like that off the internet for someone like me who barely knows the terminology is a bit 'iffy', to say the least.

Re: First grips off of my duplicator
AJMD429 , Just do a search for pillow block bearings.
They show pictures with full descriptions.
The ones I used cost about $7.00 each. X 4ea.= $28.00
Those standoffs that hold the shaft up were about $15 ea.
The Router is mounted with 2 1/2" muffler clamps at $2.50 ea. The little trim router came from Harbor Freght for $26.00. All together I have a little under $100 bux into this thing. I have had that much moneys worth of fun with it already. If you like making things like I do it`s well worth it.
