I'm Going To Try This For Myself

Post by Blaine »

I can't see anything in this that is not in human supliment form. I've adjusted the dose for my weight, and it actually contains less of some ingredients than the human product does. Unless I start pawing at the ground, or, it doesn't upset my stomach (and it doesn't, though it tastes like doodoo :| ) I'm going to continue taking this stuff, unless of course, you gentlemen have any knowledge of why I should not do so. The savings is worth the bad taste.

Blaine, is there someone around with a video cam that can record the moment you start whinnying and neighing? I'd pay to watch that video

I asked my doc about glucosamine for chronic bursitis. He said there is no credible evidence to suggest any benefits. I dislocated a shoulder and much later tore it lifting weights and have had a lot of trouble with it. Pain meds do little for it and icy hot works as good as anything for me.

I'm not sure it actually repairs damaged joints, but, I've been taking the human stuff for years, and it seems to relieve every day/morning stiffness.

Back 20 years ago before glucosamine really was marketed for humans, my wife started taking it on the advice of our veterinarian (she never asks me anything 'medical' - I'm just the guy she sleeps with... ). It sat on our microwave with the other vitamins, with a picture of a german shepherd on the label. Our kids even reminded mom to "take your doggy-pills"...

I think like most things, they work for some people/conditions, and not for others. I have seen some seemingly-legitimate data showing increased cartilage growth in knees using it, and have lots of patients who say it really helps.

I've taken several doses...mixed with one, big gulp of water, it only tasted horrible  Goes away with a quick rinse out with more water. I've got a pretty strong gut, so that sort of thing isn't a drawback. If you can't take nasty cough medicine, don't bother with this :P

I've got and old cowboy friend that used bute for years. He's still alive and can get around, though not much, he is doing life with parole for a killing and some missing horses. Don't reckon he can get bute there.

BC is basically powdered aspirin. Nothing to fix, just relieve the pain. Where do you get this stuff? Jeffers?

Dying cures those ills also. Permanently, but I don't wanna go that route. I know that stuff sure worked for my old mare before she passed away last year. Few hours after a dose, she'd be runnin' around, chasin' the other mares off "HER" feed! Most of the time she just walked into the barn.

Speaking of horse medicine a few years back I used to buy small 2 oz. tubes of ichthammol 20% ointment (best stuff to put on cuts to prevent infection and speed up healing) at local drug store. All of a sudden the stuff disappeared from store shelves. I found some at the local feed store in large 14 oz. plastic jars for a fraction of the cost. It has a horse on the label and states "not for human use" but it had exactly the same ingredients % as the human use stuff in the tube. That one jar will probably last me the rest of my life. It looks and smells like pine tar though not as strong smelling. Stuff really works great. 8-)

Can someone tell him there is NO VIAGRA in it. :D , I am sure that is the mane reason he is taking it. If not he will have to hoof it over to the drug store to buy something different.

Remember, if it gives you colic, do NOT lie down. And if you find yourself standing up during sleep, for more than 4 hrs, call your Dr. or Vet, whichever you feel the most comfortable with.

Ollogger tried the DMSO and said he tasted garlic all day long. I have used it on my horses and gotten some on my self in the process and I tasted the garlic also. Weird. Helped the horses but Ollogger could not get past the garlic taste all day long.

I am using Wellesse Joint movement Glucosamine extra strength which helps to improve joint health 2000 mg of Glucosamine 1200 mg of Chondroitin andn 500mg of MSM. Its liquid and tastes like berries. 2 Tablespoons a day. Love the stuff. Helps with Mobility, flexibility and Lubrication of the joints. I pay 15.00 for 16 servings so I clearly understand the "horse" supplements.
It would be cheaper but no way can I do the taste.

My red Heeler who is 12 was having horrible joint pain. Swelling in her hips. The product I had used on a foundered mare worked wonders so I got some for Cayenne. Its called Inflammasaver. She is running around with way less pain issues. They make it for cats, dogs, horses and humans. They have a product called Jointsaver. I read the reviews before I tried it on my mare and they all sounded too good to be true but when I tried it on my mare, I found myself also writing a review. POSITIVE
The stuff is unreal...
check it out at
http://www.figuerola.net
I buy the everyday control at valleyvet.com free shipping. The stuff is amazing!

My female wolf dog had a nasty bladder infection, 2nd time around with no cure he gave her Caphalexin, 500 mg twice a day and that did the trick. He also told me if I get a bladder infection to come up and get some since her treatment was only 5.00 I have had bladder infections in the past and I paid 35.00 for my treatment. What a difference.
I think if the animal version works for anyone they should do it. I have a friend who is a vet tech and whenever she needs antibiotics she heals herself up with the dogs meds of antibiotics.
Such a racket going on out there.
So I wonder if that stuff your taking tastes so bad why a horse would like it? I know I have to give one of my old mares some bute and she hates the taste clearly.
Anyway.. Loved the thread on this topic and loved laughing at the "horse" replies.
Stay straight in the saddle.

I take glucosamine condroitin pills, have for years, they really seem to help when I overdo it at work. I gave that, and fish oil to an old dog, it made a difference for him for several years with his old hip injury Later on, I gave him Meloxicam (people meds) and it really helped the last year or so when it was finally catching up with him. The Meloxicam was $10 for a 3 month people scrip, and at his dose, was a 6 month scrip.

I get the glucosamine at wal-mart. I get the two bottle deal, it saves a bit. I think it's about $35-$40 for several months worth when taking 2 per day.

Ji,

That ichthammol sounds like some good stuff:

ichthammol

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammonium_bituminosulfonate
Ammonium bituminosulfonate (ichthyol or ichthammol, CAS#8029-68-3 brand names: Albichthyol) is a product of natural origin obtained in the first step by dry distillation of sulfur-rich oil shale. It is used in medicine as a remedy for treating some skin diseases, such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. It is commonly used in 10% or 20% concentrate ointment form as a "drawing salve." However, it does not actually draw out foreign objects. It does soften skin over a boil or spot allowing it to come to a head sooner. It also decreases microorganisms in the area surrounding a skin condition. It is sometimes called "black ointment". Its dermatological action was discovered by German physician Paul Gerson Unna.

From elemental analysis its composition was calculated to be C28H36S5O6(NH4)2. However, as a product from natural origin it is a mixture of many different compounds.

Chemically, it is a sulfonated shale oil. It can be presented in two forms: pale sulfonated shale oil (PSSO), and dark sulfonated shale oil (DSSO). DSSO is also sometimes called ichthammol. The last form is a thick reddish brown liquid, possessing a bituminous odor and taste. It is soluble in water and miscible with glycerin, but is nearly insoluble in strong alcohol or concentrated ether. It contains a large percentage of organically combined sulfur. Ichthyol is incompatible with acids, alkali carbonates or hydrates and alkaloidal salts.

Pharmacologically, PSSO and DSSO have anti-inflammatory, bactericidal and fungicidal properties. In otology, a mixture of glycerol and ichthammol (G & I) has been used for generations for the topical treatment of ear infections. It is efficient against Gram-positive organisms. The anti-inflammatory action is explained by its influence on the formation, secretion and effect of inflammation mediators. DSSO is well tolerated and no indications of teratogenic, mutagenic or carcinogenic effects have been noted.

The European Medicines Agency recently published a Summary Report on ICHTHYOL-substances (synonym: bituminosulfonates) in course of the European Maximum Residue Limits (MRL) procedure (see report from June 2005) in veterinary medicine. The committee for Medicinal Products for Veterinary Use (CVMP) decided that because of good tolerance and safety there is no need to establish an MRL for ICHTHYOL-substances. As a result, ICHTHYOL-substances can be applied topically in all mammalian food producing species without restriction.
