Would You - Buffington Sight on Officers Model Trapdoor???

Post by rbertalotto »

I recently found and purchased a very nice condition Buffington Rear sight. These were used on 1884 and later Springfield Trap Door rifles.

Would you install it on an H&R Officers model reproduction? This rifle has only the tang sight currently. What was "period correct"?

It may not properly regulate. The Buffington came in two versions marked R for rifle and C for carbine, reflecting the difference in ammunition and in sight radius between the two firearms.

Looking through the book "The 45-70 Springfield" by Joe Poyer and Craig Riesch, I realized that. The Buffington might be out of place on an Officers model.

Seems the best sight for the Officers Model will be the 1877 Third Form............Do you agree?

Question, have you shot it yet? Hows the windage? The reason I ask is because I have a Pedersoli carbine here now that is off and the owner wants a rear sight that is windage adjustable. The Buffington is adjustable and that's what his gun will get.

The sight on the OMTD in the photo above is a carbine sight.
