Got my Re-Bored 1893 Marlin back!

I sent it to JES Rifle Reboring ( http://www.35caliber.com/ ) just over two weeks ago. Got it back this morning. Amazing fast service considering it had to go from Massachusetts to Oregon and back!

It is an old 1893 Marlin that I picked up for $435. The rebore and rifling, from 30-30 to 38-55 was $225 including shipping back to me.

I opted for the three groove rifling as I had heard excellent reports about it. Although 6 and 8 groove are offered.

I loaded up twenty cartridges and headed to the range. (9g of Unique under a Lee cast 265g bullet with SPG lube )

First group was five shots in four holes at 50 yds with iron barrel mounted sights!



The next four groups were actually better but I didn't remember to photograph them. One group was three holes (three bullets into one hole and two others close by ) under a half dollar in size!

To say I'm ecstatic would be an understatement.

Roy, I'd be tickled as well. Way to go getting a fine old Marlin back in the traces. The .38-55 is a wonderful old cartridge.Steve Garbe used a .38-55 loaded with black powder and a cast bullet to kill his elk a few years back.

What else beside a re-bore would a 336 in 30 wcf need to be a 38-55?

BlaineG ,Just the re bore. all else should be just fine.
My Marlin 336 Cowboy .38-55 shoots just like that pictured with a 250 gr. cast bullet over 14-15 gr. 2400 .
I would not hesitate to take it hunting at close to medium ranges.

Nothing......It should feed fine and eject fine. I did zero to this rifle and it feeds and ejects perfectly.

I relined an old Winchester 1873 with a 38-40 liner. You can read all about it on my web site... www.rvbprecision.com

I also have a Marlin 1889, Winchester 1866, Winchester 1892, another 1873 and a few SAA revolvers all in 38-40..........A great cartridge for both black powder and smokeless

Makes Me feel better about My Marlin Safety,but it would be a reline as it is already 38-55. There is one at a local Pawn shop for $500.
How does Jes address the caliber stamp ?

Excellent! That was amazing turn around time and, by the looks of your groups, amazing quality job of re-boring. Now you have a classic looking Marlin that is a real tack driver.

Ya know, I'm not sure what reamer Jess uses. We'll have to call him unless someone else knows. I use the short brass in all my 38-55 rifles. But Starline is backordered on the short brass until February of next year!

So it comes back as a 30-30 unless U specify ? Thanks, if I had mine relined it would be stamped correct already.

That is first rate accuracy! After 500 to 1000 rounds the barrel will smooth up and groups will be smaller yet. You have a keeper there!
