Then after you wrote "Instead of teasing the girls 500 times, I'll only tease them 400 times," right...???

I double dog dare you to say that to Sister Mary Thomas Edwards. She would have worn your knuckles out with that ruler.

Amen, Damien...................... There was a few of us, in Parochial grade school, that were stood up against a wall in front of the rest of the class while Sister Mary Elephant waled on our extended handbacks/knuckles (and palms), FOREVER !

The only hope was that, if one (or two) kept smiling throughout, she'd get really P.O.'d & break the ruler across our knuckles - and that would be that, until she got another for the next time. (There was always a "next" time)

Getting your palms smacked with a flat ruler wasn't too bad; a three sided "engineers" ruler on the knuckles... That hurt!!
The only lay teacher (non-nun) that I had was actually the most creative when it came to meting out punishment. My best friend and I (in her 5th grade) class seemed to just not be able to keep from getting into trouble. Once she caught us chewing gum; she made us stand in front of the class with the gum on our noses, which of course we just thought was hilarious and couldn't stop giggling. Sooo, she made us face the chalk board, she drew a chalk circle forehead high in front of both of us. We had to stand on our tiptoes and keep the gum which was still on our noses in the circles. I still don't like to chew gum.

One other story (I have a bunch of them); same friend and I were caught whispering to each other. First she taped our mouths shut. But we found that we could work our bottom lips free and still talk, When she realized that, she clothes pinned our tongues to our bottom lips. That worked.
Not only did I get a good education in catholic school, I also learned that I could survive if ever captured and tortured by the enemy.

Edited to add: I really did get a good education in the six years that I spent in Catholic school. The punishment that I and several others received may be severe by today's standards but I find it humorous now and have no animosity toward the nuns and Mrs Buckingam (may she RIP, finally).
The rapping of knuckles with a ruler was nothing compared to the threat of telling my parents.

Different times for sure.

Most likely the underlying reason why some youg adults today are going astray.................................. less respect/manners re-inforced upon them since the cradle.

My second grade teacher was Mrs. Gifford. Her weapon of choice was an 18" ruler. The only time she ever took a swat at me was when I was writing in my workbook when I was supposed to be listening. Fortunately I saw her coming out of the corner of my eye and pulled my hands back. That ruler hit my desk where my hands were so hard that it made a sound that I later recognized as a baseball bat coming in contact with a baseball that is about to leave the stadium! To this day, I truly believe that had I not jerked my hands out of the way that I would have been a double amputee! :|

Never had one use a ruler. But several, including the one that wacked me everytime I picked up a pencil with my left hand, must have had a never ending supply of yard sticks.

I think they used the yard sticks because they could get higher velocities at the end of the yardstick than they could with a ruler. Learned a bit of physics with that one.

The biggest problem was that after whatever form of corporal punishment occured at school happend, I had to go home, gulp!
