BLR makes meat again

Post by M. M. Wright »

Killed this nice doe Saturday evening. Really needed another but just didn't get the opportunity. We have a special doe only season the week of Christmas and since my only other kill was a buck with the muzzle loader I needed to fill this tag. About 90 pounds I think. Here in NE Oklahoma we can take a total of 5 of which 2 can be bucks. This doe doesn't count as part of the 5 though so you could really have 6. You can tell the BLR in .308 is getting well worn. It wears an old Redfield 2.5X scope with a post reticle. Load was an LC Match case holding 43 grains of H4895 topped by a 150 grain Remington Core Lokt. Chronos 2750 out of the 20 inch barrel. Range about 80 yards quartering toward me. She was coming down a hill so the bullet went in on the point of the left shoulder and ranged back with no exit. Probably lost the bullet in the gut pile.

I'm amazed at the quality of this picture from my cell phone.

Excellent older BLR, had one in a 22-250 that I shouldn't have let go, someone thought they needed it more than me ($).

How's the recoil from the 308 in the BLR?

My Grandson in the 6th grade, who is the shortest guy in his class, loves his and shoots it a lot. I have never found it's recoil to be objectionable. For one thing they come equipped with a recoil pad and combined with the stock shape I find the felt recoil to be on a par or less than a 94 30-30. Can't say the same for .358 though.

My old steel 308WCF.BLR is my goto deer gun. Magazines are hard to find and ridiculiosly expensive  Aside from that, It's hard to beat as fast handling,Brush-long range gun for North American game. :D

Standard 1919 works well. A sling is MUST HAVE for a hunting rifle.

Perfect sized for eating and The BLR reminds me of one of my weaknesses. I bought one at 18 for 208. new in the box, hunted with it for years and it was called the deathray by my friends. The 150 gr cor lokts were killing machines every deer but one was DRT!
In a moment of weakness I sold it to a dear friend so I still see it but he has used it hard to the point that the stock looks like it has been dragged behind an ATV. But it serves him well and his children too.
Congrats!

Sixgun,
The "thing with the big gear" is a hoist on an a-frame with large casters on it. Yes I use it for pulling motors but in this case it serves for skinning deer. My Dad built it in 1929. Just temporary you know to change motors on a fleet of Studebaker plumbing trucks.
