Recommend water pot for atop wood stove
Folks that run a wood stove for heat, question for you. I've seen pictures that show a pot on the stove to provide some humidity to counteract the dry heat that the stove gives off. What would be the best bet material wise (cast iron, porcelain etc) shape and size?

We use a two quart porcelanized steel tea kettle. Throw a little lemon juice in with the water to keep the calcium deposits at a minimum. One kettle fulll lasts about 8-10 hours.foxtrapper wrote:Folks that run a wood stove for heat, question for you. If you have a Korean Store nearby, those big brass-colored aluminum kettles are dandy for not much money...

We use stainless on one and pottery on the other. As long as the material doesn't allow water to wick through and rust the stove. Interesting tip on the lemon juice. Gonna try that.

I used to use real nice decorative cast iron tea kettles but anymore I use any nasty looking kettle/pot with a handle on it. Hot water on the wood stove is a must---helps to keep the "itchys" away. -------------6

We use a old beat up aluminum tea pot on the cook stove.

I used to use a stainless stock pot to keep water warm before I had running water, it served two purposes that way. Now I use a vaporizer.
Most folks seem to use some sort of teapot type thing.

Have a porcelain coffee pot on the stove in the house and an open saucepan of, I think, aluminum in my shop. Probly both dry right now, gotta fill 'em up.

We always used to use a copper tea kettle, but we had a 1/2 to 1 inch granite slab under it to diffuse the heat a little to prevent scorching or discoloring the copper. Dont know if that matters or not.

We use an oval-shaped cast iron dish with a lattice top. It holds about 3 quarts of water, which lasts about 6-8 hours.

Thanks guys. I didn't know they made pots specifically as humidifiers . I think the bear pot with a trivet is the one I'll get. Thanks for the link

Re: Recommend water pot for atop wood stove
Just remember that the goal is to put moisture back into the air and not just look cool. If you go with a tea pot, for example, it has a little vent hole and a spout hole for the moisture to escape. The rest of the steam condenses on the inside and runs back into the tea. That's why they are designed that way. If you use a baking pan, you have a huge number of square inches of surface to let moisture escape into the room.

What Gobbler said!
I also go with agood sized stock pot. Over time you will figure a size that is right for the size/burn time of your stove. The idea being to reload both on the same schedule ; ). I clean it once in a while with viniger to remove scale. If windows sweat I back off a bit.
Enjoy!
