Stoeger Uplander
I was in a toy store today and found a nice little Stoeger Uplander in 28 gauge. Used, for $359. It looked like it was only shot a few times. Unfortunately, the funds aren't there now for me to bring it home, but still wanted yalls opinion on these Stoeger doubles. They seem cheap and well made to me. And, for some reason I feel a need for a 28 gauge-go figure.

Re: Stoeger Uplander
I shoot a Stoeger Coach gun (12ga.) for CAS. I have had exactly zero problems with it and I have left it stock where many shooters fiddle with springs, open chambers and such.
I paid $325 for it new about three years ago. I would/will buy another.

Re: Stoeger Uplander
I've got a friend who has a Stoeger Condor Outback in 12ga. Seemed well built and a lot of fun in a small package. Would have been better with ejectors as opposed to extractors. I really like double barrels but feel they really shine with ejectors.

Re: Stoeger Uplander
I bought a Coach Gun Supreme when I lived in New York. When I got home to England I sent it to the London Proof House. They declined to test fire it as it was so far off face. I had it worked on by a double gun specialist, sent it for proof and again it was rejected. After two more attempts I gave up because the Proofmaster's opinion was that the design of the locking mechanism was so poor that it would never pass proof. I can't now legally sell it or even give it away as it's not in proof so I'm stuck with it. I wrote to Stoeger and the Brazilian manufacturer expressing my concerns but neither bothered to reply.

In today's market, a Stoeger SxS isn't too bad an option, IMHO - you could easily do much worse.
A 28 gauge is kinda neat - I've had a Dickenson's (Spanish) SxS and a Ruger Red Label, 20 & 12 years ago (respectively), but I like the very lightweight Ithaca Flues Model , I've had for the last 18mos, much more.
My Flues was made in 1912, instead of 2012 like the Stoeger's, so out of respect for it's age & construction, I only use special, low-powered RST shotshells.
I wouldn't use a 28ga on deer, like I do a 20ga, but for most other furry or feathered game, it seems to do just fine.

Re: Stoeger Uplander
The Stoeger in 28 is very heavy and off balance for the bore size.

Re: Stoeger Uplander
Got an uplander(not the 28ga)
Kinda of a crude gun(built like a tank)heavy-----------------but it "works" every time when you pull the trigger (least mine has) and it should last about forever!
For around 3.5 C notes though you have to be happy-----if it works and its built to last!
Bottom line------not too darn bad of a gun!
I know you got the itch for a 28ga----but in that gun-------------would opt for the 20ga(new one)for about $50 more
Mine is the 12ga(26")and every time I take it apart----think boy-----that is one heavy duty gun!

Re: Stoeger Uplander
I used to own a 12 gauge Uplander with 26" barrels, and I was very happy with it's reliability, pointability, and balance but it was the 12 gauge and the only other SxS I had to compare it to was my Stevens 311 which compared well. I'm have no idea how the 28 gauge handles but I will take Joe's experienced word on it.

Re: Stoeger Uplander
It sounds like they just took a 20 and bored it for 28. But even if that's not the case, this is a damning point in my view because I like 28 ga guns that are purpose built and thus incredibly light and handy. If not, what's the point?86er wrote:The Stoeger in 28 is very heavy and off balance for the bore size.

Re: Stoeger Uplander
I've shot a Stoeger Coachgun in CAS for 27 years with zip, nada, none, zero issues. Again, mine is box stock. Except for polishing the chambers. I also have an Uplander, same thing, but it's relatively new, only 24 years old!

Re: Stoeger Uplander
I fooled around with a buddy's Double defender (a O/U set up as a self defense shotgun). My impression was that is was a well made shotgun but I opted to stay with my Baikal SXS.
Local sporting goods chain (Dunham's) used to have some screamingly good deals on the Condor line which is now the Stoeger O/U. Built like a tank.....a little heavy for toteing around the woods but they sure dampened felt recoil. Used one duck hunting for a year and liked it.
I wonder if you could have Stoeger fit another barrel set fitted to the 28 gauge. If the price was right a set of 20 gauge (or even 410) barrels would be a nice option.

Re: Stoeger Uplander
I've had one in 20 gauge for the past five or six years. By far my favorite pheasant gun. Points naturally and I've knocked down a ton of birds with it. I'd buy another in a heartbeat.
Re: Stoeger Uplander
I went to Stoeger's sight and recognize their product. It's the same FIE I bought in 1974.
Re: Stoeger Uplander
Bass Pro Shops sells a Stoeger O/U with a set of 12 gauge and a set of 20 gauge barrels for the same stock. I looked at it once. Ididn't spend much time with it, but it was heavier than anything else there. Swapping the 12 for the 20 gauge barrel didn't make much difference.

Re: Stoeger Uplander
Shoot one enough, and they will start popping open on you. Been there done that, seen that too many times in CAS. There is a fix, but it requires a pretty good smith to do it. That said, I doubt it will ever pass proof in England......perry owens wrote:I bought a Coach Gun Supreme when I lived in New York. When I got home to England I sent it to the London Proof House. For those in the South, Academy Sports and Outdoors carries some shotguns by Yildiz that seem to be pretty good for the price.

Re: Stoeger Uplander
Unlike a firearm certificate a shotgun certificate allows one to purchase any number of shotguns. It's not an offense to use an unproved shotgun although it could be unwise. It is an offense to transfer or sell it to another person. I still sometimes use it with black powder loads, which is all I ever shoot anyway but I normally use my trusty Winchester 1897 for CAS.Old Ironsights wrote:Does an "unusable" gun like that still count against your Card?perry owens wrote:I bought a Coach Gun Supreme when I lived in New York.
