OT Fake stag grips for Uberti Cattleman
I dont have the finances for the real ones, but does anybody know
if these fake ones from Brownells will fit ? http://www.brownells.com/handgun-parts/ ... e_3=Uberti
Its the stag ones for the Colt SAA, not the ivory ones for Uberti model P. ( I can apparently only link to them )
The one thats currently on the revolver is a one-piece.
Regards

Re: OT Fake stag grips for Uberti Cattleman
NEVER EVER BET on COLT stocks fitting anything including Colt sixguns, let alone a Uberti sixgun. NOTE that even other Uberti one-piece stocks can take a lot of fitting on another Uberti SA sixgun.
I have a set of triple AAA grade burl walnut stocks made for COLT SAA sixguns that is not even close to fitting any of my COLT SAA nor any of my COLT NF SAA pistols; NONE, NOT EVEN CLOSE. but....I was warned.....

What he ^ said. Ubertis, or many of them at least, are just enough off from the Colts.as to make it an iffy proposition - unless you're right there to personally try a whole bunch of sets with the chance of being lucky on one. My smith, a well known Colt specialist, fashioned a set of 3rd Gen Colt eagles he'd received from Colt as oversized - to my Cimarron P with good results, but that was quite a bit of additional fitting. We then "aged" them to match the antiquing I'd had done on the rest of the gun. Looks just like an old Colt now, the point of the exercise. A lot of work, nd lucked into the oversixe grips to begin with, but worth the results to me.
I'd find a vendor that has some faux stags claimed to specifically be for "Ubertis," with the proviso you can return if metal proud or just too bad of a fit to work on further,...or otherwise realize you may have some final fitting to do if you luck out and they're not metal proud.

Another thing - I just read the "one piece" part regarding your current grips. Mine were too - we had to fashion (weld) a locating pin for the Colt grips, as the Uberti--at least my example--didnt have one, being set up for a one-piece only from the factory.

Re: OT Fake stag grips for Uberti Cattleman
The Uberti SAA's come with one piece wood. They start out as oversize inletted, unfinished wood then they are bolted in the "in-the-white" grip frame and the whole thing is sanded to shape. Then separated to be finished both wood and metal.
What that means is no two are the same. so, the best you can hope for is a new set that is oversized so they can be fitted.
My experience with the colts even though they mostly come with checkered black plastic none of the after markets will fit them either.

Re: OT Fake stag grips for Uberti Cattleman
My Cimarron P - w/ 3rd Gen Colts.
Fit perfectly but not without some doing (locator pin etc etc), and again thanks to some oversized grips my smith acquired courtesy Colt, presumbly meaning seconds,... then final shaped/fitted to the Cim. We then smoothed them a bit to better match the "antiquing" I'd had done. The resulting combo does nice imitation of an 1880's SAA. Well maybe a late 1890's w/ 1880s grips - given the cross pin frame. Then tuned within an inch...one of my favorite guns. .44 Special of course

Re: OT Fake stag grips for Uberti Cattleman
I'll PM you more later this week - but sorry to say don't know. The fine folks at Cimarron obliged me. They didn't have one of their already antiqued ("original finish" aka Uberti "old west") P's on the ship or in the chute from Uberti in the caliber I wanted - ordering would take awhile - so the smith offered (actually to my regulr shop I was ordering through--probably why the favor!) to "antique" a P they just happened to have on the bench for inspection that was to my exact specs (5.5" .44 Sp). No extra charge (over their "original finish" antiqued ones). nice job and with a little more life in it than the sometimes dull factory job (still like 'em, and would still have no qualms, just ike mine better!). Folks have used a variety of techniques. EDIT - Check outhaterock 2 wrote:Nice revolver gak.

His approach seemed to be the least labor and materials intensive of any I've seen.
My smith also did a Rodeo for me - basically a nice strip job with some remnant blue'ing in low wear spots - but I like it too.
Back to OP - Buffalo Bros maybe for those faux stags?

See EDIT above on antiquing.

Try Gripmaker in Carthage MO. You can stay with the one piece or just drill the frame for the locating pin. I usually fill the grip locating holes with JB Weld, fasten one of them to the frame with rubber bands and drill the hole using the pin hole in the frame as a guide. Take that one off and do the other side then put the pin in and install the grips. I do this to Colts too as you have been told no two are exactly alike.
You can buy one piece grips too that come as the two sides with a filler piece in the middle. I sometimes make my own filler piece and JB Weld to make the one piece style. Be sure you have good release agent on that grip frame first or you won't get them off.
Fitting the grips usually involves refinishing the grip frame too as the easiest thing is to just sand everything to fit. Try some of Brownell's rust blue.
