Trail Boss loads for .45-75

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Anyone have Lyman Manual #49? I hear it lists loads for Trail Boss in this cartridge. I have some 300 grain gas-checked flat points I'd like to try.

If you go to IMR website they have instructions on how to calculate any loading.

I have shot a lot of Trail Boss in the .45-70 and also the .444 . In the .45-70 I load a 300 gr. PB cast bullet over 13-14 gr. TB for just over Black Powder velocity and just super accuracy. Five shots in 1" @ 50 yards is not uncommon with peep sights. Report and recoil is so mild a young kid could shoot them all day.
Hodgden recommends to fill the case to where the base of the bullet will be when seated, weigh that charge and use 70% of that weight as your starting load. Work up slowly until best accuracy is achieved but never compress the powder charge with the bullet. REPEAT , NEVER COMPRESS TRAIL BOSS.

I find the 70% starting charge is often as far as I go in load development with TB.
Have fun!!! :D :D :D

Made the calcs with 300-grain WFN gas check and with the Hornady 350 FN and starting load is 13.5 grains or thereabouts. Finally gonna get a chance to shoot this sucker ...

Bill, I have used the same charge in the .444 as in the .45-70. Come to think of it 13 grains is just fine in my .50-95 also. :D
I shoot bullets that are light for caliber for target/plinking . No need for heavy bullets to punch paper.

I found that 14gr Trail Boss with a 325gr cast gas check gave me the best groups, really accurate :D

Trail Boss is one of those powders that is incredibly hard to come by right now. Very frustrating!!
