Leupold 6X scope

Post by 3leggedturtle »

Who has experience with and opinions with these scopes? There is/are 3-4 variants of it with objective size and reticle choices being the main differences I can. Thoughts and comments wanted.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

I usually don't care for the make,
but that is one of the good ones.

I don't much care for variable power scopes, so when I was looking to scope a 7mm Mag bolt action I went with the 6 power Leupold. As I remember it, other that going the custom shop route it was "take it this way or look elsewhere". I took it and so far it has been a good choice.

They made a compact 6x with an adjustable AO that was the pooh for a 22 squirrel rifle . Think that was back in the mid 80's or so .

I have one, fine scope. Right now mounted on a 22 Mag of all things. I have Leupolds on most of my rifles and they all been fine through maybe 12,000 total rounds. One 4x has been on a 30-06 for about 23 yrs and 1250 rds and has only been sighted in once. Another 4x was on a Dakota 270 for 1450 rds and only sighted in once. Of course I had to resight it when I moved it to the 25-35. Same experience with a 1.5-5x for about 950 rds on a Rem Model 7 in 7-08.

Nothing wrong with 6x on a mag, shot many rounds like that.

I have had a 6 x 42 Leupold on a Winchester model 70, 25-06 for probably 15 years. It has served me well for an open country deer rifle, but I don't like to use it when the shots are expected to be close or running at relatively close range. I lost a coyote a couple of years ago because the field of view was just not quite big enough for the running shot at close range, but it's taken a few deer for me over they years.

I am more of a 2 x 7 variable guy, for the most part.

Hi 3LT,
I put a 6X FX-3, 6x42, LR Duplex, #66820 on my M1A..
It seemed about right.
I like the single power and the Long Range Duplex cross hairs 'cause they're a little thinner.
FX has less internal parts and unless you overdo the power, IMHO, they are great.
I put the same (almost) scope on a .308 hunting rifle but in 4X...
Seemed about right...

Mescy: What brand/s of scopes do you recommend if buying new? I am always on lookout for K series Weaver and older Redfield and Burris fixed power scopes.

Twodot: Not exactly due north, am within 30 miles of Brainerd, MN.

Pshort: Sounds like a great combo for the 308 or 250

I can guarantee you that it's rock simple and reliable, but what application are you thinking of one for? A 6X fixed power for north of Brainerd has my curiosity piqued.

Mostly pests and target. Lots of open land where I go up north too. Seems all my 3-9x scopes are set to 5-6x. It seems to be only one of very few fixed scopes you can find anymore.

3leg,
If your variable is set to 5x-6x
We should ask ourselves, " why am I carring the extra weight of all this variable gadgetry"
I too look for older Weaver, Redfield, Burris fixed power scopes.
I can not remember the last time I saw a new fixed power.
It seems like the new stuff is all variable, with a lot more bells and whistles than I know what to do with.

Cause I was broke and was trying to make one scope work for everything including playing musical scopes with 3 rifles. Then got a great deal on 2 NIB Burris 3-9x Ballistic plex. Compared to a K4 or mid-70's Bushnell 4X they are extremely heavy.

Those are mid 70's on into the 80's scopes !

I got a Weaver V4.5 and V7 from a customer last summer both LNIB for $70 for the pair !
The V4.5 sits on top my Retro 444P and the V7 sits on top of the circa 1967 444 that I reblued and redid the wood .

I like those older Weaver mounts with the big knobs and the patent dates on the top straps !

As of now I have big knob Weaver rings on all my old 444's !

My 2001 rifle has a Leupold base and old style Redfield rings with the screws on the underside !

You are dilusional.
Look at the oculars on both scopes, they are centerless ground!
Look at the turrets on both scopes!
Those are micro track scopes!
Worth their weight in GOLD.
I did NOT send them to you.
I would NEVER part with them!
We were putting together Micro-Trac scopes BEFORE we were marking them Micro-Trac.

The things we do for women
Seems there was this bet.
OS won.
But as long as we are talking about W.R.Weaver, you guys are going to love this.
At one time we had Miss El Paso, Miss Black El Paso, and Miss Deaf El Paso working for us.
They loved to dance, and I used to go disco dancing with all three of them; in the same night!
Ok.... Top that OS!

Some Burris scopes are a bit heavy where other brands of equal quality seem to be generally less portly.

Looks like a fine scope, but a bit pricey (IMHO): http://www.opticsplanet.com/leupold-m8- ... scope.html

I bought a Ruger No. 1 in .45-70 from a member here, and will pick it up Thursday. He put a Leupold 6X on it, and I am very eager to take this outfit to the range. I'm still very fond of the brand for a couple of reasons: most of Leupold's (and Redfield's) current scopes are made here in Oregon; and Leupold customer service is without peer. Several years back I bought a used Leupy handgun scope with a tiny chip in one of the lenses. The scope worked great, but I thought I would ask Leupold if they would consider replacing the chipped lens. Send it up, they said, and four days later I had a brand new scope in the mailbox.

Back in the 80s as mentioned there was a 6X compact w/AO. I used one on a hunter class benchrest rifle to success. Its only failing was the adjustments could never be set up fine enough for the discipline. I still have it and its on a 300 mag now, still works
