Winchester 1892 .44-40 question please

Post by paulsnapp »

I am considering buying a Winchester 1892 .44-40 SRC replica that is finished is blue/case hardened. I want to replace the lever with a big loop lever like the one used in the TV show "The Rifleman". I was wondering where I could purchase just this big loop lever in a case hardened finish and will it fit interchangeably with a Rossi 92 carbine? Thanks for your help!

Welcome to our little corner of the www, Paul !

While I'm clueless as to which Model 92 clones have CCH levers, I do know that Rossi has "BigLoop" carbines, for which it's easy to buy a Big Loop lever from the Rossi (Taurus) parts dept & drop into your whatever .44-40 Model 92.

That issue Big Loop lever could be CCH'd, or you might google your way through (South American) Rossi & (Italian) Chiappa/Puma Model 92 oferings, looking for another Big Loop model of whatever chambering, with a factory CCH lever that you could order/buy.

FWIW, a few years ago I actually swapped the Big Loop lever from my .357/.38 Rossi M92 with another levergunner for his standard lever - after I found out the big loop's don't work as good as they look, and the other levergunner wanted one. (Thanks, Hagler ! )

paulsnapp,

You have a few things to think about. I believe that the lever for any Model 92 will fit any other Model 92. A few companies have manufactured large loop levers, for their version of the 92:

[*]Rossi[*]
[*]Chiappa[*]
[*]Winchester (Miroku-produced, in Japan)[*]

Lucas McCain had two differently-shaped levers, during the course of the TV series. Here is a screenshot from "The Sharpshooter", the first episode of "The Rifleman", showing a slightly smaller round loop:

Image

Here is a photograph of Lucas' lever, aparently a publicity shot, showing the larger loop:

Image

Chuck Connors gave away some of McCain's rifles. One of them went to Arnold Palmer. Here is a photograph of the "flattened" loop, taken at the Arnold Palmer display, in the Golf Museum:

If you want a ready-made large loop lever, then you have a few choices:

[*]Older, Rossi "John Wayne"-style lever[*]
[*]Rossi large loop lever[*]
[*]Rossi "3/4" loop lever[*]
[*]Chiappa/ Legacy Sports- Puma/ Taylor's "John Wayne"-style lever[*]
[*]Chiappa/ Legacy Sports-Puma Chuck Connors Tribute lever (very close to Lucas' large, round lever)[*]
[*]Newer, Winchster/ Miroku "John Wayne"-style lever[*]

Here is my Miroku-produced, Browning B92, with a Rossi large loop lever:

Image

Here is my Rossi 92, with their 3/4 loop lever (it's the rifle with the striped wood), next to the B92:

Frome our own Steve Young (Nate Kiowa Jones) is this photograph that compares the Rossi large loop levers (fullsize large loop, top; "John Wayne"-style, middle; three-quarter loop, bottom):

Image

Here is the Chiappa/ Legacy Sports International-Puma (Also Sold as a Charles Daly-braned rifle), with the John Wayne lever:

I do not have pictures of the other levers, but I believe that you can see that you have some options. However, I do not know of any large loop lever that is color case hardened.

Another route would be to have someone fabricate the lever for you. "WOODCHUCK45" sells on Gun Broker, and he modifies rifle levers. He has something for sale (Model 94), right now. You can ask him a question, to see if he will modify your lever:

Our own Steve Young ("Nate Kiowa Jones"), The Rossi '92 Specialist, owner of Steve's Guns, may be able to help you, too:

The really big-loop leverguns I've handled seemed like they'd be darn hard to shoot and operate quickly or smoothly, to be honest.

The recent 'GBL' Marlin loops are just a bit bigger than ordinary, and wouldn't fit on a Rossi or Winchester 92, but might be a more practical size for large or gloved hands. They would NOT look like Chuck Connor's gun, though.

Here is the "Chuck Connors Limited Edition" Puma, from Legeacy Sports International, manufactured by Chiappa, introduced around 2009 (picture from www.gunblast.com):

Manufacturer: Puma CCLE4440
Item: 56035
UPC: 682146710007

I do not know if this lever is available by itself. Note that the trigger-trip screw is non-functional.

I collect and research Winchester 1892's and have over 30 of them. I absolutely agree with your comment. The large loop looks goofy and is of no
advantage when cycling the rifle for a new round. Unless you live WAY up north and are wearing mittens.

The Mare's Leg on a bucket in the image above is mine, I asked Steve to do a chop job on the Rossi version to more closely match the original TV version. That included re-shaping the lever loop.

Otherwise, I have the ringlever on a Winchester Model 94 .30-30 Trapper. It's a 1994 rebounding- hammer side-eject, and with the rebounding parts it takes more effort to work the lever than my smooth '51 Model 94.
I've tried the little Trapper with a standard lever & the ringlever, and I find the ringlever gives it more leverage to result in less force being needed to cycle the action.

In my case, on that gun, the ringlever provides a definite benefit, and I've adapted my "technique" to be as fast as I need to be with the gun.

Also have a 16-inch Rossi '92 Steve's worked over, in .45 Colt.
Frankly, Scarlett, I don't give a flying phooey whether the ringlever's efficient on that gun or not, it's cool & it stays. :)

Sometimes, cool's enough. :)
