Extractor not holding shell in Rem 25. FIXED!

Post by Tycer »

Howdy,

UPDATE: I removed the worn extractor, annealed it, re-shaped it, fitted it, function tested, tempered it, polished the wear surfaces, oiled it and put it back together. Works a treat. Took about half an hour.

We'll see how many rounds it lasts. When I come up with the $40 I'll get the replacement one and the ejector spring as it is a bit worn.

The extractor of the Model 25 is letting the cartridge slide down towards the lifter just before the ejector smacks the case head, leaving the shell in the receiver about half the time. The extractor pivots on a pin with a spring and plunger exerting pressure on the tail end. The spring feels strong.

I can get a remanufactured one from Jack First for $40.
I'd like to try to fix it myself first.
Can I heat it with a torch and bend it over a bit and reshape? Do I need to re-temper it with an oil quench?

How would one go about fixing this?

I just pulled one of mine apart and the extractor makes full contact with the cartridge. I think yours is just worn out. I would buy a new one.
Glad to know where I can buy parts.

Build it up with weld, re ut it and re shape it and then re temper it. Shouldn't cost more than a couple new ones.

You done good, Tycer. Makes one feel good when you do some fixin' for yourself.

Ya done good Tycer. I would have made the attempt also. Heck I made an extractor for a 73 and it works perfect where as 2 that I ordered broke right away. Had U failed in Ur attempt then go the alternate route. Congratulations.
