What would you do with a 1995 Suburban...???

Post by AJMD429 »

250k miles or so, 2wd, 350 V-8, Runs ok, lots of wear of the interior, and some rust spots starting on body, minor dents, etc. Back window shattered out (thanks, 44MagHunter  ). For the cost of a new rear window, someone would have a decent 'farm vehicle', and one of my kids has been using it at college without problems for the past few years, but no longer needs it, nor do I.

I'd rather turn it into some money so I can fix my truck, which needs a $350 brake job, and the dashboard removed (mice totally killed defrost system), and a new windshield (thanks, 44MagHunter  - actually, hairline crack been there since before he drove it).

So, do I. . .
  • Sell such a vehicle as-is, or
Fix the rear window and sell it, or
Drive it to the pay-by-the-pound scrapyard, or
Find a 'part-it-out' place to sell it to
It was the vehicle we went on all our Family Vacations in (back when we had time and money and the kids were young), so I really hate the thought of the scrapyard, plus since it actually runs pretty well, it just seems a shame to stick it in a hydraulic crusher and put it on a freight-car. The engine surely could be pulled and used by someone who is into that sort of thing. Even the tires are pretty new, so it just seems stupid to drive it to a scrapyard, and waste four perfectly good tires (and rims), yet no way to get it there very easily without tires...

Maybe donate to church or shelter type organization for the tax write off?

If you are going to pay someone to work on your truck, see if they might want to trade repair work for the Suburban. When I was working customer pay shops I did this fairly often.

I would search for a "cash for clunkers" program, and either sell or trade both vehicles. ($350 brake job ! )

I think differently than some. Assuming you are living in the sticks like Doc, I would keep it to the side, battery always charged, fuel stabilizer in a full tank of gas, covered, or in other words, always good-to-go!

It ain't worth nothing, but in these uncertain times, that "nothing" could mean the difference between life and death if someone is home without a vehicle and needs to have a set of wheels.

No need to insure or keep it inspected, just ready. To hell with the law on some issues.-----6

Some stuff cracked and there's some suspension thing busted and I finally decided to replace the emergency-brake cable which caused the whole thing (Ziebart's "rust-prevention" [which didn't prevent rust anyway] seized up the cable and the rear brakes were sort of 'always on' for months). So it's not just a new pads or even rotor thing.

The truck has tons of more rust than the Suburban but is the same year - truck Ziebarted and Suburban not - go figure. I'd keep the Suburban but it's not 4wd, and the truck is a 2500 frame vs. 1500, plus has a separate 'towing' transmission cooler and so on. Not a pretty vehicle, but worth keeping road-worthy.

Enough parts like door-handles are similar, that if nothing else, I'm going to scavenge that stuff if I do 'scrap' the Suburban.

Been driving a 1984 6.2 diesel Suburban for years that I payed $300 for. Put a starter, new front brakes, and a water pump in it over the years. Still driving it.

Been driving a 1989 6.2 diesel Suburban since early this year that I payed $400 for.

Have had a 1991 6.2 diesel Suburban in really nice shape with really low miles, perfect interior, etc. that I payed $2,200 for a over a year ago. Haven't once successfully driven it anywhere since that I didn't have to tow it home.

Probably worth more as a tax write-off than it is if you sell it - and you'd be helping an organization in need. A charity gets help, you pay less taxes, and the government gets less money. No downside!

Had a 99 Tahoe, 4X4, that I had just rebuilt the motor in. Bought the wife a Freestyle so we gave the Tahoe to the DIL about 2 years ago. I think she's let it go dead in the water over some dinky something that needs fixing.

She's running now, grab some big ferns/twigs/branches/leaves/-------apply a nice base drab green/use them prior things with some tan/brown paint and make your camo camel. Drive er way out back(in the woods)and tough times you got your shelter. Keep a decent battery around/decent stabilized gas in er and heck you even got a mobile shelter on the fly.

Option 2----paint like option 1, lift that sucker(some steel/welder/on the cheap )(put some big old dirty hawgs on it)and park er out front in yard with a big painted sign on it(in blood red)saying----we don't dial 911 here, stay off if allergic to lead. Heck, that might be as good as a big bad mad dog!

Otherwise------give it to some very needy family that to them that would be like a fine Cadillac. No Welfare abusing cockroaches though!

Or----put some nice straw in it-----wooden ramp running up to dropped tailgate--------rear window out, fabricate a dog door ---------and let the doggies live in style!(least in colder weather) They can see all around them while they be just chilling!

Did that with the vehicle it replaced (a four door 1978 Cougar) - found someone who needed it due to rotten husband ran-off. The only stipulation was that she had to NOT let any teenage kids drive it (it was FAST). She insisted on paying us for it since it was in near-perfect condition, but had no money, so we settled for her giving me and the kids each a haircut, since she had clippers... :D

Since the Obama Cash for clunker program used car prices have soared. I'm betting you will easily get that or more.
