How do YOU get Unique to meter best in a Lyman 55?

Post by Tycer »

How do YOU get Unique to meter best in a Lyman 55?
How do you set the round slider, the coarse slider, the fine slider?
How do you operate the handle?
How do you operate the knocker?

Thanks Six! Welcome home! How was your trip? I guess you've been back a while, but I've missed your posts.

I set the measure using just the middle slider. I operate the handle briskly in both directions then flick the knocker up fairly hard. Once set the charge is usually within .1 or .2 grains max.

. . . replace it with one of these. . . :o

Harrell's Benchrest Powder Measure

Seriously, it IS an awesomely accurate measure, and seems to meter about anything precisely. Splurged for one when I couldn't get AA1680 to meter well in the sub-ten-grain range, for 300 Blackout loads using my Dillon, RCBS, or Lee measures.

I've never had a problem metering Unique with my 55. I usually only use the small slider, work the handle quickly but gently and I don't use the knocker - EVER!

FWIW...
I believe it all comes down to doing everything exactly the same (turn handle, knock/don't knock, drop charge. Same speed same force every time). I gave up and throw charges light and trickle up when I want closer than a couple tenths of a grain variation of Unique. When I get a rhythm going, I can get +- .15 grain with my C-H 502 (about half the time  ).

Unique is a great powder but don`t meter well in any measure I have tried it in.
That said, I don`t expect any load I use Unique in to be match grade anyway so a little deviation from perfect don`t seem to bother.

I am preparing to head over again February 15th actually !

This trip we'll stay at my mother in laws house part the time . But we have a couple in country trips planned as well !

One to my brother in laws place and we'll take mother in law daughter and several other family members with us as I'll borrow a Ford Explorer so my mother in law can visit some of her old friends she hasn't seen in years .

My wife and I are also taking a trip to another island to visit her cousin and his wife . This is actually where my mother in law was born . And will be my first visit there as well !

I too only use the small slide and thump the knocker once. Once in a rythum it works pretty well.
The only powder measure I have that meters Unique dead on are Dillons that I use on my RL550.

Take a good look at Power Pistol. It is a schouse slower than Unique, but finer grained and meters better. I read in an issue of Handloader where one of the writers was touring the CCI plant. He was told that CCI loads more PP than all other powders combined.
You'll find loads starting with 380, and going up to the mid range magnums. It can replace Unique. I know that statement will get me banned 'round these parts, but its the truth.
