First Deer

Post by RustyJr »

Well, after several years with no success I finally got my first deer. I had planned to use my grandfather's 270 (Remington 721) but could not get it to zero in even after changing scopes. So I ended up using my Ruger Hawkeye in 270 Winchester.

He came out just before full dark and might have had 10 minutes of shooting light left. He was the first of three that came out from behind my stand and had the biggest set of antlers ( small six point rack) out of the bunch. He was standing slightly quartering away from me at about 20 yards at the shot. I saw him hunch up so I figured I hit him good. As I attempted to chamber a second round my rifle jammed. Near as I can figure the claw didn't grab the rim as it pushed it forward and as a result the round went into the chamber but wouldn't let the bolt close. Fortunately in the middle of clearing the jam I looked up to see him going over backwards. He only traveled about 50-60 yards.

I was shooting Federal Premium with a 130 grain Nosler Partition. Bullet entered the right side and exited just behind the left side shoulder and left about a 1/2" exit hole. Didn't see any blood on the ground where he had been standing but then again didn't look too hard since I knew where he went down.

Now that is a deer you'll never forget. Congratulations. That is a fine looking young buck.

Here are a few more pictures from the deer stand. These were taken the day after I got my buck. Had three gobblers come out and then about 8 hens and a jake (one of the other guys on the lease got a better look at them) that came within about 75 yards (not close enough for good pics) the same day I took the pics. My buck was standing at the end of the second and third row of trees from the right (in the last picture).

Good morning and Congradulations !
That first one is always the best one.
If you have not already done so I recommend you start a hunting journal. Write down all the details. Things you learn, things you want to remember. Good ideas and mistakes not to repeat. I get mine out before each new season I get to hunt and review.
Enjoy those "straps" !

It is Southwest Georgia. Little town call Georgetown. Just east of Eufala, Alabama. I'll definitely consider the journal. Hadn't thought about it but it could be fun.

Good for you! I hunt just northwest of Cuthburt. Probably 10-15 miles form you.

Congratulations! That's great!

I have seen a Ruger Hawkeye do the same thing yours did if you feed the first round directly into the chamber. Fill the mag, close the bolt to drive one into the chamber and it works like it should. Give it a try.

Great buck!

Congratulations! You made a good shot there and now you have some mighty fine venison. I too am a fan of the .270 Winchester; it really does the job! :D
