In Tribute to TxPete

Post by Griff »

TXPete, (of this forum) sent me a bunch of 7mmRemMag brass before he passed away, more'n 250 rounds. I've been holding it, and trying to think of an appropriate loading and hunt to take it on, in his honor.

So today, after prepping (sizing, decappin', and trimmin' 300 rounds of .223), I took these 25 rounds of nickel WW brass and decided to load them up. I settled on some Speer 145 gr spire point boat tails and 62 grains of IMR4831. I'll chronograph them in a couple of weeks (headed out of town tomorrow), but anticipate that they'll clock in the vicinity of 2839fps (if my calculations are close).

I believe they'll do nicely for either deer or antelope out to 300 yards... So, that's the plan. Next year, I'm going to get up to Wyoming for Antelope in Pete's honor. I haven't ever hunted antelope, nor tasted it and my brother in law keeps buggin' me to go; it'll be a check mark off my bucket list.

Griff: I gave TxPete a Lee .44 200gr WC 2-cavity mold back in '05 or '06. Did he use it and enjoy it? Nice looking rounds BTW
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Likewise. We chatted on the phone once, and emailed a few times. Sometimes we think we have all the time in the world... then we don't.

Tested 10 different bullets once at 200-300 yds. That one was the winner - good choice.

He seemed like one of the truly good ones who made a difference in the lives of a lot of folks. I enjoyed talking to him, and miss his presence here.
