35rem kill

Post by n2t »

Last few days of the season. Thought I would take the 35 rem and my rcbs 35-200 for a stroll. I use air cooled WW alloy with gas check, sized at .359. My marlin is a 1976 with micro groove bbl but that doesn't seem to affect how it shoots with cast. I crossed a small creek , waved to some hunters that did't want to cross the creek and walked in about ten steps. A small 3x3 buck stood up and I shot him through the onside shoulder, with the bullet exiting the offside ribs. He ran 25 yards and crashed head first into some brush. The exit hole was about 1.5" and of course no bullet recovered. Leg bone was shattered on the onside and broke a rib going out, the whole chest was full of clotted blood. Very impressed with this combination and really can't wait to try it on something bigger next year.

I'm impressed with the pic of the bullet. It looks to have alot bigger meplat than what mold pics in Midway shows. I went with Saeco instead because of it. Looks like a great eating deer
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

I really like the saeco, I think they have a 250grn bullet I can push to the same speeds as I'm pushing this 215 grn. The meplate is enough, but not the huge meplate I was hoping to have available, it works well but I wonder if bigger would be better or if the deformation renders it unimportant. I would like to get the saeco someday and compare the results..that said, this bullet seems to do very well and I have no complaints. For sure it's no trophy deer but I'm ok with that, they all eat well for me.

I had the Saeco 250FP the FP wasn't very big. The 180grRNFP meplat was/is bigger. I sold the 250 awhile ago for that reason.

Hm..maybe I did ok with my 200 grn rcbs then, sofar I've been really impressed with it, I had thought I made a mistake not getting the saeco once I found out the bullet likes about 1900fps, cause I can push a 250 that fast as well. But..it seems like I may have lucked out, on game performance was very good as well, so I guess I'll be sticking with this bullet.

Very nice to see people using cast bullets to hunt with. A good clean kill. :D

What was the powder you were using?------6

Right now I'm using 32grns of Benchmark, which isn't even a max load but seems to shoot better than hotter 2200fps loads for me. But there's a couple other powders that hit the same speed, and this gun seems to shoot most of them just as well.

Congrats! The Beartooth 210 has a little wider meplat but has to seat deeper. In the 356 Win. it works but not sure if the 35 Rem. neck is shorter and whether it is usable. Looks like you did well with that bullet.

Someone mentioned the meplate, not huge but workable. There are overlubed, and I use much less now, but it still gives you a good idea of the meplate size.

Nice shootin'! 8)

That's what the 35 Rem was designed for, and it still works as advertised.
That buck was dead when he was hit, he just didn't know it for 25 yards.

More proof, if any was needed after more than a century of use, that there's
nothing wrong with a bigger bore cast bullet for hunting, either.

Lead bullet, moderate velocity, and dead deer. I thought you had to use one of the Super Magnum calibers that kicks with about 40 foot pounds of recoil to even stop a deer, or at least that is what the gun magazines say. I would bet that deer just died from laughter. (Smart alec remarks don't come across well when typed.) All silliness aside, nice deer and good shot.

Lol I don't do well with magnums or recoil, but deer seem to die just fine most of the time. I have a 300 savage, a .243 win and a 35rem, covers most things just fine for me.

Ty sir, also shot a doe twice with the 300 savage using 150grn hornady interlock. Found jackets in the deer and 6" exit wounds. Not a good bullet for the 300, switched to 165s for next year sofar...

Great info. I think after the deer season, I will get set up to work up cast bullets for my 35 Rem. I definitely am in love with this cartridge with this new to me rifle and I will bookmark this thread for the info. Great looking bullet. Nice deer.
