Picked up a nice piece of "Old West" history.

This is a 4 1/2 by 3 inch calling/ business card of Dan Breen. He owned the Turf Exchange Saloon at 510 East Houston Street in San Antonio, Texas around the corner from the Alamo. It was a saloon and gambling house. Dan Breen had been partners with Billy Simms since 1895 until Simms death in 1909. Billy Simms was a sporting man and had been one of the three killers of Ben Thompson and John King Fisher at the San Antonio Vaudeville Theater in 1884. Both were well known gunfighters and gamblers? They also both had been lawmen. The San Antonio Light Newspaper reported on August 19, 1910 that at about 9:30 P.M. the night before in Dan Breen's Saloon, former Hidalgo County Judge D.B. Chapin shot and killed former Texas Ranger and current Deputy Sheriff of Cameron County Oscar J. Rountree. "Mr. Chapin stated that there had been personal ill-feelings between himself and Oscar Rountree for a long time. The card probably dates from around 1910. Chapin was set to have the county seat of Hildalgo County, Texas name after him but after the shooting the citizens decided to name the city Edinburg. I thought you might find this card interesting. That is Oscar Rountree second from the right on the top row. Capt. J.H. Rogers is first on the right second row. A young Frank Hamer is pictured third from the right on the second row.

If it was around 1910, and he already listed 'both' phone numbers - he was a cutting-edge "technology" dude, too - something you don't always think about when viewing century-old black-and-white photos. Fascinating.

Mr Breen was evidently a savy businessman since the name 'Wines, Liquors and Cigars' sounds a lot more classy than the 'Turf Exchange Saloon.' T hat card must have been stuffed in the back of a desk that was never opened since it looks like it's in pretty good condition.

Texas isn't that tough a neighborhood. Just be careful what you say, and smile when you say that. Jeff Cooper, I believe, said a polite society is an armed society.
