I've got one of these Bushmaster Varmint rifles and it shoots pretty good from a bench.
I think I want to get a new upper for it just in case I have to keep Islamic Jihadists out of my yard and to continue keeping the King of England off our shores. (no offense Nath & game keeper) Something like this:
My question is this, would you opt for the flat top A3 variety and add fancy dot/hologram optics or would you stick with the stock sights of the A2 variety. I've never shot this rifle other than off the bench and have no military training.
Looking for opinions from those that have used them exclusively and know more than I.

If you want to get the best out of a new upper I would suggest some type of optical sight. I have a Colt Hbar that is scary accurate with optical sights. The carry handle sights are only good for a couple of inches at 100 yards with good (Match Quality Ammo) why handicap yourself. They have a whole new generation of optical sights for these rifles. A lot depends on age to. Old eyes need help sometimes.
It seems to me that if you're going to be forced to have 16" of barrel you should have 16" of BARREL and not flash suppressor for the wanna-be look. I would get a flat-top with the fold up sights front and rear and put a low-power scope sight in it (I simply can't see red-dot sights well enough for them to be useful). I'd also have a collapsable stock as this maximizes the the stowability (concealability). In a rural battle environment, without constant mounting and dismounting of a cramped vehicle I don't think you need to change a thing.

I see no benefit whatsoever to that silly thing fastened onto the short barrel to bring it up to 16". Why have an SBR and then attach a long flash suppressor? I agree with Hobie, that 16" of tube should mean 16" of rifled barrel. My favorite Bushy 16" upper unit is the Dissipator, which gives me a good long sight radius, plus has that front sight out there far enough that I can actually still focus on it with my aging eyes. I have not bought a Dissipator upper, but if I decide to again carry a patrol carbine, a Dissipator upper is on my short list. (edit: Or, I may just use a 20" HBAR upper.) As for flat-top or A2, well, if an optic is desired, flat-top is the best way to go, as there are nice back-up sight options. My chief will not let me use optics, so for me, A2 makes sense.

You can have both. A flattop upper with w removable carry handle.
Hobie's right about the barrel. If a retro CAR-15 look is what your after, you can get an honest 16" barrel with a slip over fake moderator. It will LOOK the same, but you'll get 6" more rifling.
AR is a Colt Sporter Lightweight that I've had since '93. Outstanding carbine, I don't know how many thousand of rounds I've fired but not one jam.
I have an Eotech holosight on a scout mount and i love it!! If I was to buy another I would opt for a flat top just for the wider range of optics and mounting positions. Mounting scopes on carry handles is easy but not all scopes have enough adjustment to get far enough down to POI.

I'd agree. If you're unsure at all, get the flattop. That is how my Colt is. I use it mostly for target practice with the carry handle peep sight. I have put a scope on it at times for longer work on prarie dogs out past 200 yds. Nice to be able to have either option, depending on what you are using it for.
Another nice option is a collapsible stock. With the sixteen inch barrel, & the stock collapsed, it is a compact little unit. Fits nicely in a 4-wheeler cargo box.
Opinions - don't lik'em, no use for 'em. Saw all I wanted to of 'em in the Army and National Guard. I do know this; if a guy for no reason slams his steel pot on your toe about as hard as he can and then you hop around and at your earliest capability while still hopping grab the thing by the barrel and wing it off his shin you may break the forend and lay open his shin - so, have some contrivance of a cockamamy story ready to tell the drill sargeant.
I do like that pistol in 2nd's post - what is it?

Never knew much about them, but after watching the Outdoor channel, and saw a Hunter using one for Coyotes I was impressed. That guy could really reach out and touch them Coyotes. I think he was using the new Remington Version.

I don't see a reply from Jason yet, but I have one and it is handy and durable, but doesn't feed as reliably (even with ball ammo) as my Marlin Camp Rifle in .45 - then again I don't think I've ever had a 9mm that fed as well as a .45 in any kind of gun.
Wish they made 'em in .45! (but they DO make a .40 for those who like .40's)
One interesting trivia is that the rear sight on the Ruger PC is just like the Redhawk, and if you have a 'ghost ring' sight insert you can use it on the PC as well as a Ruger handgun. They also have the Ruger bases which are pretty nice (except to put a Holo sight on one you have to use a weaver rail with ruger base adapters)

I've been really pleased with it. Mine works just fine w/ fmjs and hollow points. Haven't had a single reliability problem with it and it shoots just like a big 10/22!
The only thing I don't like is the safety. It's a push through in the guard just behind the trigger. A flip type like a M1 Carbine would be a lot easier and more familiar to use.
Watch the aftermarket magazines. Some of them work really well and some are junk. I got really lucky at a show right after I bought it and a fella had used Factory mags for $4 ea. I bought them all!

VERY accurate. (i 'zeroed' the red dot at an indoor range of 50'...results were ten rounds within 3" circle at 50' on rapid fire...half of that when i took my time)
i'm not a fan of the .223/5.56 as a combat cartridge so i don't pursue the AR series as a 'self-defense' platform. i was trained with M1 garand and m-14.

OH! I SEE! So some of you leverguys do own other things like those evel Black Rifles. Nothing wrong with that. I used to have a Colt HB, but found it too heavy for my tastes.
I have been considering getting another, but this time it's going to be a pretty light carbine, probably a flat top, I just havn't settled on the brand yet. I kinda want a Colt but at a Bushmaster Price.

I agree on the safety - even if it were in front and still the same type it would be better.
As far as magazines, maybe THAT's my problem... What magazines do you find consistently reliable? I think the only ones I have are two of the Ruger factory 10-round (post-ban), a really old 16 rounder, and a cheapie 25 round extended (IIRC it actually works a little better than the others).
Maybe if I could get a really 'good' magazine and test it out I'd be more confident in it.

Genuine Colt Government Carbine (an actual trade-in from the Palo Verde Nuke facility in AZ), Knights M4 Carbine freefloat RAS, Aimpoint Comp ML2, GG&G BUIS front and rear, Surefire 660 Classic.

Love these Black rifles too. Flat top models are easier to put a scope (or red dot) on. You can mount scopes very low and aiming is much more comfortable. Some of my Colt's.
