Varnish(?) on Bbl tube, Need advice...

Post by pshort »

Howdy Folks,
I'm cleaning up an old (1908) Model 8 Remington for a friend. While taking apart, I had to tap the forearm loose with a plastic mallet.... It appears to have had varnish leach out of the forearm and "glued" the wood to the bbl housing..
What would y'all recommend to remove the varnish without hurting the bluing?

Thanks in advance for any ideas......

Paul

.

A lacquer thinner cloth rubdown - although sometimes varnish can easily be scraped off with a wood popsicle stick, cut at a 45-degree angle.

Traditional solvents for varnish are turpentine or mineral spirits. Try a dab of each on a q tip in an inconspicuous spot to see if it affects the bluing.
