I was stationed in Panama for a couple years......There were some very large constrictors there. Some of them could be seen walking back from the NCO club at 2AM. I think MPs spent half their time placating "anxious" dependents.....

As to the video clip, none....but, on a 1 lane jungle road, our bus saw one crossing that the head and tail were not on the (sort of) pavement......Bullard4075 wrote:Any guess on length ?

Bullard4075,
A rough guess would be approximately 18 feet. This is not fully grown yet.

Re: Juvenile anaconda
BlaineG, despite Discovery Channel efforts to convince people how cute and wonderful these things are, I'm still shooting them on sight. They can be quite obnoxious and no child or dog on a watercourse bank is safe with them around.

At one time I was scheduled to go to a jungle warfare/survival school in Panama but got bumped out of the slot. I was extremely disappointed at the time....not so much now. Re: Juvenile anaconda
That jungle training is probably some of the most miserable time a soldier can spend....A guy in my unit took it, (a reasonably BA Airborne type) and he washed out the first few days....Not unusual from what I heard. I loved Panama, but, the bugs, spiders, snakes, caiman, etc were worrisome.firefuzz wrote:At one time I was scheduled to go to a jungle warfare/survival school in Panama but got bumped out of the slot. Re: Juvenile anaconda
A master of it's element.
I'll one up Blaine's snake story. At Eglin in northern Florida our problem wasn't so much the snakes as the alligators. Darned things were still protected, and had a habit of crawling out on to the roads to sun themselves. The SP would usually try to get them to move by banging their clubs on the road. When that didn't work, we'd run a crash truck out and hit them with the monitor. Other than being really, really PO'd no harm was done, but they did move.

Re: Juvenile anaconda
OI, I blame TV for my becoming a firefighter. No, not Emergency, that came along after I got started. Back in the late 50's or early 60's there was a show Rescue 8. Think Emergency with the technology of that era. It was around the same time as things like Ripcord and Whirlybird. Dang I just dated the heck out of myself.Old Ironsights wrote:For those who don's speak "fireman"... a Monitor is a water cannon, usually vehicle mounted...

Re: Juvenile anaconda
I think these big snakes should be great testing media for reverse HB WC. Or solid DEWC at 900-1000 fps.

Re: Juvenile anaconda
You officers had it easy, we had snakes IN the EM club at NAS Albany, Ga. Apparently the Chiefs did also.

Gee, that's a different term used for "B" girls walking home at night
I had a blast at jungle school, went through back in the 70's, RVN was harder
ONe of the cadre sworn up and down he had been hiding behind a small hill of leaves and stuff, and then it moved, saif it was a LARGE SNAKE, bump was a pig it had for lunch

Re: Juvenile anaconda
For the record, they aren't much in the chow department. Tough, chewy, not much flavor. Ate one years back that had been attempting to dine on a feral rooster. The rooster was one that was on the Ark with Noah, judging from the size of his spurs. Tough old bird. Still, he was better eating that that sucurí (anaconda) was.
Here's a video made of some pics of one wrapped around a bovine - that'll give you an idea of how big some of them are.

Re: Juvenile anaconda
And if there's any doubt one COULD swallow a human - take a look at this one found in Paraná...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feDKoWUu3Co
That's a capybara inside, the world's largest rodent. Capable of reaching a weight of 80 kilos, they are larger than many humans. If the snake can get one of those down, there's no question they can down a person as well.
