If you trespassed around where I lived when I was a kid, one of my neighbors would spray paint "No Trespassing" on the hood and doors of your car with Orange paint. He only did it if he saw the same vehicle twice (the first got a firm but polite note on a piece of paper slipped under their windshield wiper).

One of the others would use his front end loader to flip the vehicle upside-down, and another would occasionally just set fire to vehicles he found on his property. Both of those guys were wealthy and had 'connections', so when the Sheriff was informed about the incidents, he'd just tell the vehicle owners, "Well, I guess you need to be more careful when you start cutting cables and chains and going on other people's property - some of them evidently don't like you doing that..."

I think the attitude of the neighbors was that if you weren't willing to buy your own place, or ask permission from someone who had done so, you should stick with public hunting areas.

I was relatively 'tame' in comparison, all I ever did was let the air out of all four of their tires by removing their valve-stems, with a tool one of the Sheriff Deputies gave me for just that purpose. That gave them time to come out on a non-emergency call and have a talk with the trespasser.

I know a few years ago when my son was in the valley behind our house bow-hunting, and I heard rapid fire rifle shots clearly in that area, which is in the center of our 75 or so acres, and surrounded by a thousand or more acres of privately-owned land where I know the landowners do NOT allow hunting, if I'd have found the guy, he'd have wished he just got spray-painted.

Even as it is, we get several pickup-truck loads of trash and dumped appliances and furniture to deal with. Sometimes the dumpers are stupid enough to leave some discarded magazines and mail with the trash, and if it all has the same address, we just load it up, take it to the address, and dump it in their front yard. We call the cops so they know what we're doing and why, and never have had any of them tell us not to do it.

It is always the right thing to do when you ask permission. It may or may not be granted, and that is the owner's right. I have never sneaked onto anyone's property to hunt, and have no respect for those who do. One time my Dad, brothers, and I were hunting on some land owned by a friend of my Dad. We had noticed a No Trespassing sign that was new on the gate. Dad had a key to the gate and we had driven in and parked. As we were unloading our shotguns to go hunt pheasant, a man we didn't know drove up and ordered us off the property. Dad asked him who he was, and he said that he owned the property. Dad just asked him to open the gate so that we could get out, and he couldn't do it since he didn't have a key. About that time, Ivan H., the owner, drove up. Ivan stopped and said "Hi" to us. He then asked who the other fellow was, and received the same answer about him being the owner. Ivan went back to his truck, pulled out a plat map and found the property. Ivan made a show of pointing out that the State of Kansas plat map listed the property as being owned by Ivan Headrick. He then asked the other man if he was Ivan. The other man said that he was, and Ivan reached for his wallet and stated, "There must be some mistake since my license says that I am Ivan." I saw my Dad point his shotgun at another person that day. The other guy started to look a little green around the gills. He asked if he could leave, and Dad and Ivan both said yes. My oldest brother and I had already noted the plate number of his truck. We later found a bunch of wildwood weed growing in the field. If that guy would have come back, he would have found his truck in the tires of a John Deere 4640.

I used a similar device in my gamekeeping days but it only fired a 12 GA blank. I wish I'd had a camera set up back then...

That's awesome. I can't believe they wrote the property owner a ticket. That's some BS. I won't say I have or haven't booby trapped my property on occasion ;-)

I had a beautiful black bear sow last year that someone poached .

Have your property surveyed, post it and then actually spend time in your woods.Keep the ### ##### off.
Caught one up in my woods two weeks ago.Extremely rare.
Heard at 11AM a extremely overkill loud owl call.
I knew it was someone turkey hunting(as I was being on my own place)
I waited and sure enough at 11:55am coming down one of my log roads(full camo no orange)a dude.
I cut him off walking up, I yelled hey what the #### you doing on here.
Mind you was ready for in a serious note " whatever ". Before he could even pass gas put the smart phone up and clicked his pic. He said he was lost. I stared him hard and said my ### you were. I "made" him go down my one log road escorting him all the way. He said now he has to walk two miles to his truck. I said how do you know that?
I said I ever catch you in these woods again you are in a world of hurt cause I will know cause I am always in these woods.Walked to "the spot at road, looked him deep and said "one chance, its used" He went a walking yapping away on his cell. Hop toad hop. Dude was young and big too. No mind! Toady!
You come on my posted land without my ok, your my enemy and game on. Its that wonderfully simple.

.

A friend (now passed) of mine, from Maine, kept a chainsaw in his vehicle (he was a woodcutter, among other things) - and just used to drop the biggest trees, near the tresspasser's vehicle, all around it to box it in.

He said he didn't usually happen across the same vehicle twice.

    I can't believe that the old gentleman only said a couple of cuss words and was pretty calm about the whole thing.
I also can't believe the owner was given a citation; however if the trespasser had been injured by the booby trap I suppose a HUGE lawsuit would be the result.

It would be pretty interesting to see how that gizmo was rigged up to work.

I used to get trespassers all the time on July 4th. They all said the same thing... "..the fireworks stand guy gave me directions and said it was 'ok' to come down here."

It took a couple of years to find out WHICH fireworks stand it was... as there are about 8 or 9 in the area... After the neighbor & I went up and had a "talk" with the fireworks stand owner... that seems to have trailed off in frequency.

Yes... booby-trapping your property in most locales is illegal. However, when you find a trespasser, how you detain them for the Sheriffs Dept is sorta up to you!

Pete, I like the trees boxin' in their car! And Doc... everyone should have that tool to make tire repairs with!
