Don't be stupid, like me.
I go to the range every Memorial Day, sort of my own way of honoring our fallen soldiers. I always shoot my guns that have been used to defend our country, M1, 1911, AR, etc. Got there this morning and realized I forgot my safety glasses. No problem, I'll just wear sunglasses for this time. Nope, I left the house so early I didn't need them. I'll just shoot, it'll be OK just this one time, right? Well you see what happened while I was shooting my 1911. Don't know what it was, but thankful it was in the white, and not more damaging. Use safety glasses folks, every single time!

WOW, lesson learned! I typically don't use shooting glasses, but thankfully I force my kids to use them whenever I take them shooting. Maybe I need to rethink and pick me up a pair as well!

I got in the habit of keeping extra glasses and ears in the car years ago.

Re: Don't be stupid, like me.
I have always needed glasses to do anything due to nearsightedness, and when I thought about getting LASIK, I decided against it, as I figured most of the time I SHOULD be wearing 'glasses' anyway, just for protection.
Most guests WANT to wear hearing protection unless we're shooting suppressed 22 LR's, due to the discomfort from high noise levels, but I really have to persuade them to wear 'goggles', as there aren't any 'unpleasant' things visually when shooting, at least right up until you get the metal in your eye...

Yes sir, you are lucky indeed. You should go to your Ophthalmologist to make sure no tiny pieve of metal isn't imbedded in the sclera (white part). But, perhaps it was a bit of spark from the ignition that got you.
Thanks for the warning.

I keep shooting glasses in the glove box of my car and my Explorer. I am nearsighted, and must wear glasses or contacts to see my nose. My eyes are the most precious of my 5 senses. I use hearing protection each and every time.

I've had a piece of the jacket on my 230gr FMJs slice my scalp, and leg....(A) No more shooting at steel plates so close, and (B) I'm glad for my glasses....

I had the primer burst on a Thompson Contender 223. Piece of primer blew back through the firing pin hole into my eye. I ended up having three piece of steel dug out of my eye. It happened out in the boonies on a Saturday, I couldn't get to an eye surgeon until Monday morning. I was lucky and lost no vision, but it was a scary and painful experience.

Ted, glad it wasn't any worse! I usually just wear my regular polycarbonate-lens bifocals, but they offer little side protection.

Ted,
Relax brother. You are not stupid. It's not your fault that your last name ends with "ski". Look on the bright side, your first name could be "Jamal".
One step above that is being Italian. I have scars all over me.
What 1911 were you shooting? Was it a Norinco? If it was you deserved it.
For real, it's a good thing it was in the white. Even with that, it's still scary. Glad your OK. Another lesson learned.----6

Re: Don't be stupid, like me.
No "ski". Great grand dad came from Germany. Worked in the steel mills in your neck of the woods till they decided to move west in the early 1900's.Sixgun wrote:Ted,

Amen to that. And ear protection, too!Mescalero wrote:Chain saws, trust me.
When I was much younger I used a torch for heat and an impact wrench to loosen the nuts on axle U-bolts. No glasses. Got a tiny metal sliver imbedded in my eye, just outside the iris. I get shivers every time I think about how miserable it was to get that swabbed out of my eye and then get the rust ring polished out. Glasses all the way, now.

I was like most. I would wear them if I had them otherwise I'd just shoot. Well several months Bach while working up a 38 load for my daughter the top strap and cylinder blew off of my dads 38 smith copy he got back in 1934. The load that did this was a 75 gr NOE wadcutter at 600 fps. I had the revolver looked at and it was decided that metal fatigue was the culprit. Took me a week of going over my process before I got back into shooting. All I found was what was left of the casing. I wear some sort of glasses now.

I have half a dozen pair of SG's laying around. I 'll start wearing them.

My maternal grandfather was blind in one eye, wood chip from chopping logs! That has made me have safety glasses all over the place so one pair is always handy.

Dispatching a rattlesnake about 8 feet away, a shot pellet bounced back off a rock and nicked my cheek near my eye - close enough. While you wouldn't expect to wear shooting glasses every second just woodswalking, a good reminder that things that can enter your eye eventually will. As a 48 year contact lens wearer, I know this corollary to Murphy's law well.
