Wow, what an ugly front sight!

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Just had to grab this cut-down Model 1884 Trapdoor Springfield the other day because the action is so crisp and the bore appears mint. But boy, this is the ugliest front sight I have ever seen.
I think I will replace it with a Beech combination front, as Springfield used on the Officer's Model of 1875.

Anyone here ever seen a homelier article?

Came home from the Wanamacher this last week-end with a trap door. Never owned one before but it was just too cheap and had not been altered at all. Just has one wing of the rear sight broken off. Terrible bore too. We'll see how it progresses. Don't see how you could lose anything by replacing that front sight.

M.M., you can replace that rear sight. Go to trapdoorcollector.com.
Good luck with that bore. Years ago I had a trapdoor with almost no rifling left in it, and I had it relined and chambered to .40-82. It was nicely accurate, and I let somebody talk em out of it. Mark Beinke here in Oregon did the reline, but I believe Mark is retired now. You could have Bob Hoyt of the Freischutz Shop in PA reline your barrel. He is a genius at this.

I'd shoot it before I replaced the front sight. That sight in conjunction with the rear sight may be set up to put a round dead on at ???? yards. Maybe the previous owner spent a lot of time getting the sights juuuusssssttttttt right. I gotta say though that it's not the prettiest sight I've ever seen.

I agree.

What Modoc ED said +2. It would at least tell you what height sights you need to find.
Ugly for sure.

That's a beauty, and MVA will get my highest recommendation.
On my Ubert low wall, I have a globe and Creedmore that also came from the Uberti store.
The machinist at MVA made a level-clip for the front sight for me, and they also sell my favorite globe insert
