Finally got a Parker hammerless 10 gauge !!!!!

Post by 6pt-sika »

Finally I won a Parker 10 gauge hammerless . Well it still needs to get here .

Just won it on Gunbroker !

It's what seems to be a rather nice Parker EH grade 10 gauge on a #2 frame with 30" Damascus barrels and made in 1889 technically in the first full year of the Parker hammerless shotgun .

This gun matches all in the "Parker Identification and Serialization" book !

These are pics from the auction on GB !!!!

Now the wait !

I'll get the funds out to the seller Monday and they should have it Wednesday or Thursday . Hopefully they can get it out to me by Friday and then I maybe can get it by Tuesday of the following week .

Thanks , that was a contributing factor for me to get up of the Benjamin's to buy this bad boy !

This is more then likely gonna be my NEW goose gun . Of course I'll need to handload Bismuth or ITX-10 for it .

They've been turned but not as much as a DH 10 gauge I bid on before this one .

This one as stated earlier is said to be M/IM .

I eventually wanna get another EH #3 frame with 32" F/F barrels .

It's kinda neat (well atleast I think so) the 10 gauge grade 2 lifter I bought a couple months ago was made in 1881/1882 , the 10 gauge grade 2 top lever hammer gun I bought in the summer was made in 1884 and finally this EH 10 gauge was made in 1889 all were made within 7 or 8 years of each other .

I am thinking by the time this thing is in my hands perhaps the dipsticks at my gunclub will be finished screwing with the ranges again and I can pattern buckshot in this gun and my Parker Lifter 10 gauge . I've been waiting now for over a month to pattern the lifter gun but the dipsticks have had the ranges closed :x :x :x :x :x :x

I cant see the photos here at work, so I will check it out when I get home. I just bought a well used Parker hammer 10 gauge at my local arms dealer this weekend. It's in rough shape and will be my next project gun, but I am very excited about it. The engravings and lettering are all very clear, but the buttstock has deteriorated and that has caused some separation for the side locks however, the barrels ring like a church bell, so I am sure it will be a great project gun.

I'll post photos, too, when I get home. It's an 1882 1-P top latch hammer 10 Gauge. I can't tell the Frame but it might be a 1, with twist barrels.

Cool ! That's a Grade 1 isn't it ? And it's on a #3 frame methinks ? I have a Grade 2 top lever 10 gauge hammer gun that was made in 1884 . When this EH gets here I'll take a picture of my three Parker 10's .

Yes! How did you know? And, no yes, please post pictures of the grade 2. I'd like to see any that I can.

I think my stock may not be original, but maybe you can tell me. In the catalog descriptions for the Grade 1 P shotguns, it doesn't mention the silver shield, but mine has one. Was that still available on the lower grade shotguns?

If you take the screw out on the lower part of the trigger guard you can pivot the trigger guard and see the channel it fit in , generally if the stock came on the gun when it left the factory the serial number will be stamped there .

I'm going to meet a friend at our local gun club Wednesday afternoon . Wanna shoot a round or two of skeet with the EH as well as a couple pairs of targets with my 10 gauge lifter gun . And I still have yet to take the Krieghoff K-32 I bought before Xmas to the range , might shoot a round or two of trap with that as well !

All the screws look good except the one on the floorplate directly in front the trigger guard . There is one smart ding/dent in the right barrel that you can barely notice on the inside and last but not least the forend checkering is worn a bit . While the one tube has the dent the bores in this gun are shiney , the wood has some decent figure , the Damascus pattern is faded but still seen , the engraving is still sharp for the most part . Overall I would rate this one a touch or two above average .

Oh yeah as soon as I got the gun and made sure it functioned I then took the trigger guard screw out and pivoted the trigger guard to make sure the serial number under the trigger guard matched . And to my great relief it did

I have not disassembled mine yet to check the serial numbers.

You said before you were going to go trap shooting. You don't have any concerns shooting Damascus barrels? I have heard that twist barrels are okay if the walls are still thick enough, but I have never heard anyone say shooting 19th century Damascus is safe.

Twist damascus six of one half a dozen of the other ! I think I shoot something like eight damascus guns now .

Went to the club today ! Shot a round of skeet with the EH and broke 22 of 25 . Then I shot my Grade 2 top lever and broke 23of 25 . I think I can live well with them both . Also tried the EH at 25 yards on the pattern board with hand loaded 0 Buck and both barrels did well . As a side note I tried my lifter Parker with 0 Buck and it did even better .

I'm gonna try and get 50 shells loaded for the EH this weekend . Wanna make them 1 1/8 ounce this time . Next Wednesday we're gonna try and shoot again but this time I wanna shoot a round of skeet and a round of trap with the EH . Also plan on dragging my 16 gauge A.H. Fox A Grade along for a couple rounds of skeet . And possible my liftergun to try some more buckshot hand loads .

Went out today and shot one round of skeet and one round of trap with the EH ended up with a combined 45 of 50 . That unto itself isn't that great until one realizes I was pulling for myself by stepping on the pickle .

Also tried it on the pattern board with handloaded 000 and 00 Buck . This old gun seems to like my buckshot handloads !

Sharp gun. I like the wood and the Damascus pattern on the barrels. Does the pattern usually fade with age / oxidation or are those patterns usually pretty strong for the life of the gun?

I would say it most likely fades some and or wears off a fair amount . However it's relatively easy or so I've been told to rejuvenate the pattern .

Getting ready to do the buckshot loading for my Parker 10 gauge 2 7/8".

Already know it'll be 8 of the 000 Buck pellets per shell and I think 6 9mm cases full of Grex .

For the 00 Buck it'll be 12 pellets and 6 9mm cases of Grex and the same for ) Buck .

For #1 Buck there will be 16 pellets and not sure about the Grex .

For #2 Buck it looks like 22 pellets and the jueys out on the amount of Grex .

I've never tried #2 Buck before but I lucked into 6 or 7 pounds of it recently , so I figured what the heck .

Just finished counting buckshot holes and am still at the gunclub . All loads were fired from the bench at 25 yards . #3 Buck was 20/26 pellets in the right barrel and 21/26 in the left barrel . #2 Buck in the right barrel was 16/22 and the left was 18/22 . #1 Buck in the right was 11/16 and the left was 15/16 . #0 Buck in the right barrel was 11/12 and the left was 10/12 . 00 in the right was 10/12 and the left was 12/12 . And finally 000 in the right was 8/8 and the left was 8/8 of also !

Nice guns you have there friend.
I would have a hard time hitting clays with a field gun regulated so as to hIt behind the bead. I like to see the target above the bead and have shot trap guns in the field for so many years it's now habit to have the target above the bead.

Have you seen the video by Jack Roe on how to put a double gun "back on face " or how to "tighten the bite" ? Lookfor them on YouTube under Midway USA's video selections.
Jack is in his 90's and was trained by the best English gun makers. Very interesting!

Years of shooting trap and skeet guns that were regulated about 70/30 make me wanna float the bird still .

Loaded some lead #2 birdshot yesterday . 1 1/4 ounce and tried it in both barrels from 25 and 40 yards .Even though the guns choked M/IM it did very well at 40 yards for geese with the #2 shot .

So I will try #1 Bismuth birdshot in it soon .

Just made a couple orders for ammo and components !

From Precision Reoading I got a 7 pounder of #1 Bismuth bird shot , a 25 pounder of Remington #1 Buck , some new Remington 10 gauge hulls , some overshot 10 gauge card wads and some 16 gauge 1/4" Nitro wads to use in the 10 gauge shot cups .

From Cheaper the Dirt I ordered a FLAT of Spartan 20 gauge #1 Buckshot shells thats 250 shells . I think some of those will be sold in the shop 50 of them should last me a lifetime or so !

The Bismuth is most certainly for this Parker and a couple other 10 gauge guns in my possesion !
