Completing A Nice Shotgun And Case Combination

Post by Shrapnel »

I have been working with the local shotgun shop here in Bozeman for several months to make a period leather case work for the George
Daw shotgun I got about a year ago. Finding a period case for a gun this early with the characteristics of a transition cartridge shotgun and having the carry-over from the percussion era is not easy.

Charlie at Hill Rod and Gun, here in Bozeman, found a leather case and we started to work on it. Several months later, we have the nearly completed project and it looks great. Old guns deserve old cases...

It does indeed look great! :D

Now all you need to do is add the accouterments such as a cleaning rod, an oil bottle, cleaning patches, and maybe a few period cartridges.

Do you have any pictures of the gun in use?

I tell ya....there ain't nothin' like hunting or shooting with the real deal antiques.

Shrap........You and I think alike.....carrying the gun you like while hunting, shooting, or competing is more important than the quest of our endeavors.

Nice shotgun and case...even if it is British and it don't say...."Winchester" or "Colt". :D -----6

Historically we did kick their BUTTS and send them home, but we never made a SXS shotgun that would eclipse theirs...

Very nice job of aging that case.

What kind of work did you have to do to "make" the case?

We did not make the case, we adapted an original vintage case from the percussion era to a transition gun, which is what the Daw shotgun is. This shotgun was made early in the cartridge era, about 1865. It carries over many percussion characteristics, such as the fences around the firing pins and the forearm remains part of the shotgun.

To find an old case such as this isn't easy. The hinge and carry handle are on the same side, which was changed later as cartridge guns progressed. The case is all leather and quite nice for its age...

If you look close at the triggerguard, you can also see this shotgun is a true underlever...
