An IMO Interesting New Police Procedure
.
It seems that LE (in Denver, at least) is improving/changing their shooting/gun crime procedures, in order to catch BG's sooner.
I found it interesting, and hope you do, too.

Seems an informed miscreant might just carry a revolver, and avoid leaving that much more evidence behind.
Or scatter a few un-touched pick-up cases to mislead investigators...?
Then again, could be just AP blather, by design to support the anti-Rights push for more of the "micro-stamping" myths. It IS a funding year for ATFE, afterall.

Soon they will be pushing for all newly manufactured guns to have their fired cases registered in the database before they are retailed, then the purchaser will be added in upon the sale of the firearm. And we all know where it will go from there....

Which would mean exactly Squat to someone smart enough to own a throwayay Barrel and Emery Cloth... (Heck, if I were a BG I'd actually leave the barren at the scene too... just to make the point...)TedH wrote:Soon they will be pushing for all newly manufactured guns to have their fired cases registered in the database before they are retailed, then the purchaser will be added in upon the sale of the firearm. Hmmm... matching casings from various scenes, identifying a criminal and taking him off the street? Where's the problem? It's not like they were going house-to-house demanding to test everyone's guns was it? Good forensics can solve crimes. Not new or seriously newsworthy. The sky is NOT falling.

In the states that keep such databases, they do not help to solve any crimes, just cost taxpayers a lot of money.TedH wrote:Soon they will be pushing for all newly manufactured guns to have their fired cases registered in the database before they are retailed, then the purchaser will be added in upon the sale of the firearm. Ballistic fingerprinting of cases or bullets only helps gain convictions, or link additional crimes AFTER a crime has been committed, and AFTER a suspect has been identified and investigated.

Re: An IMO Interesting New Police Procedure
I'm not convinced of the effectiveness of picking up the brass. It may be similar, and may have some distinctive marks, but I'm thinking as far as actual convictions go, it will probably be a little too coincidental to other firearms. But this is not exactly new stuff. Maybe the database. Might help to establish a pattern or motive for a gang banger.
I question the numbers entered. They stated nearly 2.4 million brass entered. Where are they getting all this brass? The homicide numbers were about 9000 per year, I believe, and some of these had to be justified shootings, and some would be caught at the scene without using the database. So even figuring the 2.4 million over a year, and calling the 9000 criminal shootings that equates to about 250 rounds per death.
Why are these huge Hollywood style gun battles not all over the news. Don't forget that this is the average, with some being shorter, and some longer...
