New Bullet & Cartridge Case Technology
.
FYI, the July 2015 Guns & Ammo has an article (and an ad) about a new bullet technology available now, with new cartridge case technology coming soon.
Currently, the technology is being expressed in handgun cartridges.
The company developing this technology is POLYCASE, and the products named POLYONE.
The article says that PolyCase is turning bullet technology on it's head with polymer/copper injection-molded projectiles, that puts a new twist on ballistics.
Their Inceptor ARX Self-Defense ammo is using brass cartridge cases until their polymer cartridges case come online.

Oh great. I don't handle change well. Not changes to the basic underlying foundations of civilization. Can't we just go paleo?
Wait, that's coming too.

Re: New Bullet & Cartridge Case Technology
Polymer cases have been around a bit. We will see if they succeed.
Re: New Bullet & Cartridge Case Technology
Why dont we just go back to organic cellulose cases using real gun powder.

Just when I think I've gotten this brass case reloading thing down... along comes the "next-best-thing!" I'm still waiting for my phazer...

Re: New Bullet & Cartridge Case Technology
I hope it'll work, but...
IMO reloaders/shooters seem to be kinda "stiff necked" and slow to accept radically new stuff. I have fuzzy memories of caseless ammo (Daisy) and electronic ignition caseless ammo (Remington?). Anybody remember "Trounds"; Poly triangle cases? Gyrojet? Lots of talk/advertising, they didn't take off though...

Re: New Bullet & Cartridge Case Technology
Latest proven technology for military small arms ammunition is cases made from thin wall stainless steel tubing with an aluminum base similar to the traditional shotshell. It is lighter and cheaper than brass cases and has greater internal capacity. Don't know how amenable to reloading it would be but it uses conventional Boxer priming.

Re: New Bullet & Cartridge Case Technology
Too light. The .40 truncated cone is only 114 gr.
I know, in the movies, any hit with a 9mm will put the bad guy down. In real life you gotta wait for them to bleed enough to get weak and fall down. They proved that in the Philippines over 100 years ago.
I carry only .40 or .45 with heavy flat point FMJ. They'll break bones or crack a vertebrate on a through and through. Then the bad guy falls down.
If there are innocents in the line of fire break the bad guys leg and they're not in the line of fire anymore.

Re: New Bullet & Cartridge Case Technology
As for the new case technology, do a Google image search for USAC Ammo. Everything old is new again.
Slow is just slow.

Re: New Bullet & Cartridge Case Technology
As mikld said, they began playing with the poly cased Dardick trounds in the late '50's and '60's. And don't forget the old Nyclad rounds.
Re: New Bullet & Cartridge Case Technology
.
I remember the Trounds (a triangular plastic saboted bullet, fired through a spiral triangular bore, that were the Dardick's fodder.
IMHO, the Dardick/Trounds failed in the marketplace mostly due to a new/unknown propietary gun & ammo (read: hard-to-find & expensive); whereas the new ammo uses new/different projectiles fired from familiar case designs, in a wide format of pistols.
I found the G&A article an interesting read about the bullets/projectiles.
According to the article, the lighter bullet weight is apparently OK, on the premise that the bullet is effective due to hydro-static shock from the deep spiral fluting ogive design - sort of like the difference between a JSP & a FMJ.

And I'm too keen on the name either. "What's that you're carrying?" "It's a Dardick..."Old Ironsights wrote:That and the gun is simply butt-ugly...

I guess that I'm just not in denial, of the future trend in firearms/ammo, instead being interested in the various modern developments.
AFAIK, the PolyCase's won't need the metallic cartridge case head, and the projectile's are meant for performance/business, not training.
