I don't know how I stumbled on this but I thought it rather interesting. Some of our leverguns made it over there to be part of the home guard too.

A large number of 1892 Winchester were sent to arm the Home Guard..

You'd think a country that's been through a few good wars would know the value of keeping a well armed militia, but not Britain. They probably chopped up all those beautiful old rifles and sent them to Japan as pig iron.

I just watched the first episode of Wartime Kitchen and Garden. Thanks for the link, it's well worth watching.

If memory serves, most of the 92s weren't even uncrated, and when the unpleasantness was over, surplus "lend-lease" arms were dumped at sea..

I wonder if that was a result of Britain voting for a socialist government after the war and kicking out Winston Churchill.
That was the start of the decline of a once great country. IMHO.
