I like my Redhawk 44 Mag & 444 Marlin XLR levergun 'pair' - they can even share some bullets and if needed, powders.



Round the set off with a 44 Mag carbine for general totin' and a 44 Bulldog for CCW, and that covers most needs...

Whatever long gun I happen to be hunting with, a .45acp is usually with me. I might have my tiny little S&W .22 AirLite stashed away in a pocket with a little bottle filled with ammo. A fellow is "serious" if he can hit stuff with his choices.

I have grown partial to my Puma lever M92 in 480 Ruger. Twelve rounds of 390 grain lead cast ready to sling feels pretty good.

My carry revolver is a 6 1/2" S&W model 29-1 nickel, custom shop tuned.

Here is the one I would add to the 44 for an open sight combo, a 444 Big Bore.

Good choice! A 94 Bigbore .444 will kill anything in North America. And it's shorter and lighter also. The .356 is another good option.

The two I will go or stay with are both the same great caliber... 45 Colt. Ruger Blackhawk or Dan Wesson for the hand held and an old Interarms Rossi model 92. One caliber both shooting the same ammo... 19 grains 2400 under a 280 flat nose gas checked. The east ILLinois river bottoms I hunt contain nothing big enough to need more.

A lot of good guns and interesting choices in this old thread. But to my mind, an outdoorsman who's serious about maximum flexibility and utility would be better served overall by a good .22 rimfire rifle and a good 12 ga. shotgun.

Well, I won't disagree about the GS.


But the Super Blackhawk if just not necessary as I've got a Blackhawk in .45 colt. And properly loaded the .45 colt will do anything the .44mag will do and more.


And unlike the OP I do own them.

It's funny, looking back at the joined dates with so many at Fri Mar 30, 2007, the day that the forum server changed, as I recall. I was the fourth one to "rejoin" at 8:25 am. There's my substance, lol.
BTW, I was fiddling with my '99 ported Guide gun today, filing the hammer, so it would snag the bolt less when cocking. But If I ever get to go on my promised pig hunt again (fat chance here in Enemy Occupied Monterey Bay CA)) I'll be carrying a 1894 41 mag and a S&W Model 57.

Well I do have the Standard Marlin 1895 with (GASP) a Redfield scope(sorry, old age and bad eyes) and a .357 Ruger Bisley for backup. But now for hogs I have gone all modern and use a Springfield M1 Scout rifle(with a 4x scout scope) and use my Colt Anaconda for backup. I tried one of my AR's but it did not put them down hard and fast the way the 45-70 did and the .308 does. God Bless.

You're apologizing for a scope? Heck, I've got a holo sight on my GS. Ghost ring for backup, cuz Murphy always drains the battery right when you need it most.

Yes; but FHG gets somewhat busy with too many (in my opinion) other hunters.

Since the original date, I have acquired several firearms, including a Marlin Guide Gun in stainless, and a Ruger Super Blackhawk. As far as them being something that no serious outdoorsman should be without. Well, maybe. Am I pleased with them? Yes. Have I used them on game? Yes. Have I seen other outdoorsmen use other calibers to equal, or, perhaps greater effect? Yes. My not so humble opinion is that it still comes down to the man as much or more than the gun, no matter which caliber is being used.

I reckon his family came from the Alscase-Lorraine area of France and Germany. My wife has some family with the same last name Tschirhart. Don't reckon they are any kin, I think his family has been in Texas since the early or mid 1800's.
