Sight dogs for coyotes

Post by M. M. Wright »

Nath will like this. I saw 4 whippet/greyhound "sight dogs" running a coyote this morning. Quite a sight. I ran down the hunters and told them where the dogs were but they move at about 35 mph and that's all we could manage on the gravel roads we were on. I thought the dogs would be wearing GPS collars to make them easier to keep up with but these had none. Wish I had taken even a lousy cell phone picture but I didn't.

Why would coyotes need sight dogs? Don't they have keen eyesight, too?

Sight dogs is a term I've never heard but it's close to what I have always called Greyhounds and Lurchers "Gaze Hounds".
I used to hunt with a Saluki cross Greyhound, poetry in motion when on a Hare or Fox.

Tis a great experience.
Use to go with a guy decades ago who had a lurcher with a bit of everything in it!
He would call fox in then slip the dog and bang, it was all over!

These hunters have dog boxes on their pickups with doors that leave a gap at the top on both sides to let the dogs stick their heads out. Dogs are mostly crosses with a lot of whippet/greyhound in them. Usually there is "kill dog" that is crossed with an oorang airedale, (100 lb.dog).

There are some videos on Youtube that are what you describe. Looks like a lot of fun.
