Re: Project gun
Got the final shaping and sanding done to the reworked stocks. Using Chromium Trioxide I got the color matched, so I wont need to totally strip the old finish to match it up.
Once it's dried for 24 hrs. I can begin touching up with Wipe On Poly, and matching to the rest the wood's finish.
Taking the barrel over to a friend's today. He's a Guild engraver, and is going to try to teach me how to cut lettering on the missing letters. I doubt I can be taught at my age, but I'm always happy to be exposed to those who have such talent!

Purty. Im still not sure what the reason was for reshaping but I've no doubt it was worth it to you knowing your discriminating taste. I know less than nothing about those types of rifles other than they go bang, so I like em.

Re: Project gun
The squared forearm, with geometric shaped end was very out of place for this era gun. Same for the ugly Vee shape to the bottom of the pistol grip. A nice "S" shape, similar to Marlin's design is more appropriate.sore shoulder wrote:Purty. Sending out the parts for case color and rust bluing Monday. Hope to get the wood refinished by then, and ready to assemble when it returns!

I usually just sit by and enjoy all the great posts you have made over the years That color matching on the wood also turned out beautiful !!! You sir are a man of many talents.marlinman93 wrote:Got the final shaping and sanding done to the reworked stocks. Re: Project gun
Thanks Phil! Metal is headed out in today's mail. Hope to get it case colored and blued before our August Collector's display show here. I'd like to add it to my Schuetzen rifle display at the show.

Re: Project gun
In between coats of stock finish, and sanding, I filed and sanded all the gouges out of the brass buttplate. Also finish sanded the grip adapter, and then polished them both out with a buffing wheel and some jeweler's rouge. Ready to install when the metal comes back!

Re: Project gun
Just got a couple packages in the mail today! My freshly rust blued barrel, and case colored receiver from Snowy Mountain Restoration in Montana! Al Springer did his usual fantastic workmanship on the metal! Even went over my draw filing, and got the barrel corners a bit sharper! My pictures don't do his case colors justice!
I had to scramble to the basement and get the barrel in the vise and spin the action on it! Then put the wood and brass parts on so I could get a quick idea of how it all looks together! I'm tickled with the results, and glad I could bring the Schoyen back to it's proper look with a lot of help from Al!
Still have to reassemble the breech block halves, and set triggers, but then she'll be ready to roll!

Re: Project gun
That sure doesn't look like the same rifle I saw at last month's meeting. Al did his usual top tier work. Was he able to hide the holes in the barrel?

Re: Project gun
I had some help from my friend Bill, a retired tool and die maker. We got fillers peened into the dovetails and D&T'd holes. They aren't invisible, but Al said the rust bluing would hide them further, and he was right. They'd hard to spot, if you didn't know to look for them!jdad wrote:That sure doesn't look like the same rifle I saw at last month's meeting. Al did his usual top tier work. As you saw firsthand, the gun as I got it looked good from a distance, but a real eye sore up close! I'm very happy the way it turned out.

Wife took pity on me, and let me break her no gun parts on the dining room table rule! I assembled the set triggers and breechblock, so she's complete now!

Re: Project gun
Thanks! I can't take much credit, as I simply filled the barrel holes, reworked the wood, and polished metal out. Al is the true artist with his talent for casehardening, and fine rust bluing! Without his final finishing help, I'd be lost!

Great work Val, reckon it shoots as good as it looks. The Lord sure did bless you with some fine rifles.
