Short 410
Anyone cut a 410 barrel down and patterned it afterwards? Curious how good or bad it will be with no choke. Gonna be just a fun camp/house gun. Todd/3leg
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Re: Short 410
Cutting it down to what is the question!
If you cut off just the choke section then you'll have a cyclinder bore 410. I have a 410 with a skeet choke, works fine for sporting, birds, slugs. Actually before non toxic shot was the law I shot many ducks with 3"#5's.
A 410 will act like any other shotgun with no choke, just the patters are going to open up fast.
I hunt pheasants with a 28, I shoot skeet and modified with 3/4 oz 7&1/2's- dead is dead.

Re: Short 410
It's a over under Savage, top barrel is bulged like they shot it when obstructed. Figured 18.5" barrels would be handy. A long shot in my woods is 10-15 yards at most. I also had a 28ga, really liked and was impressed with how it patterned out to 40 yards. Thanks for the real world info. Todd

Re: Short 410
I have used cylinder bore .410s and would now rather have a cylinder bore than full choke, the .410 being a short range gun, does not require a lot of choke to be effective at normal .410 range.
My preferred choke would be modified but improved or cylinder would work for me, I have an over/under .410 for sale that is full and extra full, if I can't sell it I'll get it opened to imp. & mod. failing that I may just cut it down.

My grandson has taken 3 wild turkeys with his .410 before he graduated to a 20 gauge. He has taken 2 turkeys with the 20 improved cylinder. Thd trick is getting close.

I have photos of two patterns from my old M6, 18" barrel, I assume cylinder bore. One crappy, one okay.
2 1/2" #8
3" #6 (low, shooter's error)

Slow is just slow.

Thanks GK that's the advice I was was looking for. I appreciate the other posts to, so looks like I'll be having at and not worry about shots to 25 yards or so. Todd/3leg

Re: Short 410
I bought my daughter a Stoeger 410 Coach Gun for her first gun. Both barrels are FULL Choke and it patterns pretty nice out to 25 yards. It is definitely something that I am confident would be suitable for her for a home defense with the modern special loadings available. NOT TO MENTION ALOT OF FUN!
