Henry Single Shot rifles -- MSRP US$427.00

Post by Ray Newman »

Sorta surprised me that there is no .30 WCF in the initial production.

After all, what is more traditional and time honored than the .30 WCF for deer hunting??.....

I like the shotgun action locking lever.

It's entirely possible that I'm out of touch with pricing, but it seems Henry has gotten expensive. (I'd like one in .223 if these turn out to be accurate enough to use the round's full range)

Wonder what the 'street price' will be.

Since I have an H&R Ultra in 25-06, I see no particular need for one right now....

Same here!

I'll take a .308 and maybe a brass .45-70 as well. Wonder if they'll do an interchangeable barrel thing if these are a hit?

I'd take one in 38WCF.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Hey lookit that, they got sights on them!!!! Yayyyy!!!

I kind of like the one with the pistol grip stock. But like Ray, I think they need to chamber them in 30-30 too.

I'm thinking you wouldn't want to spend the afternoon plinking with that in 45-70. :o

Not with my Bear Killer loads but I've spent a lot of time shooting Springfield Trapdoors with a 300 or 350 gr LRN and a lite powder charge. Sixgun told me a couple years ago to try 11 grains of Unique that's been a real pleasure to shoot out the older rifles.

The list price seems high to me too, but from the picture they do appear more nicely finished than my Brazilian .44 mag. The wood is definitely a step up from my plastic stock and in person the price might not seem so dear. I paid just over $200 for my .44 and it came with a scope base and removable cheek piece. I don't expect the Henry to match that price for American quality, but hopefully the street price is close to $300.

They look good. I'm critical of Henry of some things but, these single shots look way better finished than those of Rossi or H&R/NEF. And they are about half of what a new No. 1 or 1885 costs.

They will never sell a whole lot with the glut of cheap bolt guns on the market, but they might fill the niche between utility rifles and premium falling blocks. Sorta like a modern TCR 83.

Accessory barrels would be nice. I wouldn't mind a 44 and 12 or 20 combo in a take down bag for the pickup. A scoped 308 would be nice too (or 3006, 270 etc)

This and the long ranger have me looking at Henry a bit more more. Now if they could only embrace King's patent on some of their tube rifles. Front loading large cartridges was obsolete 150 years ago.

I also kind of like the pistol grip version. I wonder if Williams or someone else will figure out a receiver sight to fit the scope base mounting holes.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

The .30-30 will probably follow.
As for pricing, if I haven't already said it I'll say it now- These are not cheap imports & they're far above the quality levels of the H&Rs.

I would not hold your breath for any interchangeable barrel program.

That 44 mag. could be a 444Marlin in short order.

This thread made me think about the H&R and it looks like there aren't any available.

The H&R single-shots were dropped two years ago.
Only used available now.

I would pay the list price for the steel frame in 30-30.

If the rifle is well made and finished, then the list price is very reasonable. As with the Long Ranger, my only concern is the relatively short barrel. On a single shot, 28" is a much more agreeable length.

I want one!

357 could be readily converted to 35 Remington.

Or the barrel could be bored out to 41 magnum.

Just sayin'..... 8)

The .243 and the .357 look attractive to me. :)

I didn't know H&R was low quality. I have a couple and they seem fine to me. I just wish I had stocked up on barrels when I had the chance.

H&R was a good value before Remington took over and lowered the quality.

I talked to my local gun dealer today & he is going to get me a Henry single shot rifle when they become available.
The price should be between 350-375.

That is really a shame. What Remington did to the legacy of Marlin and H&R is a travesty and hard to forgive. I had always figured on getting a handi-rifle for the grandsons first hunting rifle. I'm sure I can still find one but of course they will be going up in value. I know Rossi makes a similar rifle but I've heard bad things about their QC and customer service. For the cost of the Henry I'd rather just get him a bolt action.

It IS hard to justify a single shot for the cost of a bolt action.

It depends on the relative quality of the two, and whether you enjoy picking up brass. I generally prefer the single shots.

Agreed, there are some single shots such as a Sharps, Hi Wall etc. that I can see the value.
