I Got My "Little" Toy

Post by oldgerboy »

I got it, I got it, I got it!!! My Little Sharps is home. The wood is not very fancy but both pieces match. The metal to wood fit is pretty good.

It might just be the best balancing rifle to carry I've ever owned. It balances perfectly right in front of the action. Just using my calipers, the bore measure out to .380-.381 so my stock of .375 bullets for the other .38-55 will need to be supplimented to acommodate this one. I've still loaded up a few just to give it a trial run today.

The importer says they are not going over very well and is considering dropping them. That's the word they told us when we picked it up. Hope the guy was wrong.

Last gun show we had here 5 weeks ago, someone had one in a Hornet, but he was pretty proud of it. $1,200+. I didn't need it that bad.
It's the only one I've held, but it felt great to handle, just like you said about your 38/55.

Yeah, I saw 4-5 on a table at a show a couple of weeks ago. Nice but I can't justify $1100+ for one.

I'm fortunate since I "work" (a word disputed by my wife) at a shop on the weekend that I got mine for cost. I did have to sell a couple others to get the cash however.

I want to slug the barrel ... do you think a .440 round ball will be too big? I measured the bore the best I could with my calipers and ir appears to be .380 or so.

Pure lead, you should be able to tap into end of barrel and push back out with a rod. Won't give you the whole length minimum, but give you a pretty good idea.

Not all that good an idea ... it is all I have. Despiration makes for a good reason to think hard about a solution.

oldgerboy,

Take your caliper to the fishing department and get an oval pure lead sinker the next size bigger than your expected bore size. They're what Marshall Stanton (Beartooth Bullets) recommends for sizing the bore while fire lapping.

I'm not familiar with these rifles. It looks nice. Can you explain why it has two triggers? Also, this is a black powder rifle, right? Percussion cap? Am I way off?

Anyway, nice looking rifle. I like the wood.

Howdy u.e,

It is a copy of the Sharps of legend and Quigley. It is in .38-55, a cartridge originally from the 19th centuary but currently adored.
The two triggers are called "Set Triggers". If you pull the rear one first it "sets" the front one for a very light let-off. The let-off is adjustable down to the breathe-on-it point.
