Made a handle for a old axe.
I found this axe head where there was a logging camp that was beside the logging railroad back in the hills that dates between 1890-1895.
Started with a oak board and went to work on the shaving horse, just finished it.

Re: Made a handle for a old axe.
Nice!
We have a double-bit axe that has been in the family for nearly 140 years.
It has had 4 handles that I know of and at least 2 heads.

Re: Made a handle for a old axe.
Nice work Lenn!
Bein in logging country, I'm sure you know how special an axe was to it's owner. A very personal thing.
Always makes me wonder when one is found like that.
My dad always told me to never pick up or use another man's axe without permission.
I keep one in every vehicle.

Thanks buddy, this one was buried beside the foundation, dirt, where the bunk house was.
I have six axes now and just bought a couple more, one is a new Kelly perfect single bit.
I`ll post a picture when I get those.

....that's ok, as long as you used the same wedges to hold the handle on....

Re: Made a handle for a old axe.
Yes they certainly were Pitchy! My family on my mom's side were loggers. They owned and operated logging teams back when it was done with horse teams here in Oregon. My grandfather and my mom's first husband were both killed in logging accidents involving horse teams. My mom used to tell us tales of all the loggers who were killed or injured working in the woods. Mom was the cook for the logging camp my great grandfather and grandfather ran. She saw stuff that most young teenage girls would have nightmares over today!
