RSY, 86er called me and can't get online. He said the Rockwall address is good. $100.00 deposit for meat hunt, $250.00 for trophy hunt. Make check payable to "T. Riekers" . Glad your able to make it for the hunt.

This looks interesting

Post by O.S.O.K. »

I'v hunted hogs on the Mesquite Ranch south of San Antonio a couple times - David Smith if you know him. I think he DBA as Texas Wild.

I've got a buddy that has me to Mississippi every year to hunt on his deer farm. I'd like to offer this to him as a thank you.

Please give specifics - $350 - includes the "ocomodations"?

We are good guys - easy going and not poacher types if you know what I mean but definately safety concious.

How many guys would be there and what kind of acreage?

That kinda stuff... por favor.

Gracias.

O.S.O.K. 86er in the process of going to N.Y. to get ready to go to Africa for the Levergun hunt there and may not get to the computer for a couple of days. I'll try and answer for him. The $350.00 dollars will get you a meat animal. It can be an exotic doe of several types such as Blackbuck, or a hog. The $350.00 also includes accommodation's, transport to and from S.A. airport, if flying in. Meals are not included, we usually go into town or throw in some money and cook at the ranch. The ranch is approx 1000 acres. I think right now it well be about 6 of us there with room for a couple of more.
If I can answer any other questions let me know, we would like for you and your friend to join us. We all ways have a great time and good hunting.

O.S.O.K., you would need to get your deposits in by the end of May, $100 dollars per hunter for meat hunt $250 for trophy hunt. You can hunt from blinds or spot and stalk.

Go back and read all of 86er's posts in this thread. They contain all the info you're seeking. :?

Trophy is $1,250 with a $250 deposit due now.

You may want to also poke around Joe's website to get an idea of available game and see pics of past hunts:

www.tarsporting.com

Look for a button at the bottom of his homepage labelled "Gallery."

We are a go go

Post by O.S.O.K. »

I just spoke to Smitty - and we are a go for this!

I'm pumped - thanks for the web site addy - great pics!

Please add Jac and Smitty to the list of hunters.

I will send the deposit(s) in today to the addy listed upthread.

Does this get going the morning of Friday the 8th?

I'm flying Smitty in - was thinking of maybe the afternoon before and drive over on the 8th.

I'll most likely bring a scoped .270 or 30-06 and a couple of leverguns. I saw some handgun hunters too....

O.S.O.K., your more then welcome to come Thursday afternoon but it would be an extra $50.00 per person for the accommodation's. Also because of the insurance you won't be able to hunt til Friday. Bring as many guns as you want, but remember I not responsible for my drool getting on them :D . Glad ya'll can make it and I look forward to meeting you and Smitty.

Currently, it appears we are going over our original target headcount by one.

How many more might Joe want to accept? I have a pardner that may want to make the trip, as well.

Post by O.S.O.K. »

Dang, I must be getting slow in the head. The title of the thread is "LEVERGUN Texas Safari..." So, lever guns it'll be. Smitty has a nice old Marlin and he can choose from a number of mine too.

And did I push the limit with my buddy? Thought there were two spots still open?

OSOK:

"Leverguns" really just refers to the group/forum. From what I saw in the photos, I'm pretty sure folks have brought non-levers to hunt with, too; though I'm sure they'll still be the dominant platform. I'm probably bringing a Win. Model 70 in .270 WCF as a back-up piece, myself. See you there.

As for headcount, it was down to one after I quit crawdaddin' around. Don't worry. You just pushed the envelope and I'm trying to ride a buddy in on your coattails a bit. :) Truth be told, he probably won't be able to make it, anyway. But, we'll see.

I plan on bringing my sharps Hartford heavy in 45-70, and my win 94 in 32 spl, and perhaps my 1886 in 45-70 of course unless I sell it before then. I will have along a sidearm or two also. heck, may even through in a shotgun.

Primary hunting - during the day? The only reason I ask is that my past Texas summer hunting has all been hog hunting - which is best at night when its cool and they come out.

I've no experience with the exotics. So, day hunting? From stands or still hunting?

I'm trying to figure out which rifles to bring. Just installed a new sight on my 30-40, 95 Winchester and would really like to take something with it.

O.S.O.K., 86er is trying to get settled into his new house with the wife and boys and is out of the loop for a couple of days, I'll try and answer for him, hunting will be during the day, usually spot and stalk, but they do have stands/blinds if you want to use them. You can never bring to many rifles :D .

Depending on the weather, we will hunt safari style right at daybreak. That is - spot the game from the truck, make a plan, and stalk back to it (them). For those interested in a particular animal we will try a ground blind where the species seems to congregate. Morning hunting maybe 6:30 -10:00am. Afternoon hunting starts at 6:00 - dark. A 30-40 would be fine for just about anything you can shoot. I hope to finish a little early so we can take a tour of San Antonio for the folks coming from out of town.

Great - sounds great! I prefer still hunting. Nothing wrong with stand hunting - I just like to get out and stalk when feasible. And hunting during the day is also preferred - nothing like trying to tell if what you're looking at is a boar or a sow and which end is pointing which way - by the light of and faintly glowing LED.... that's night hog hunting - though, again, I'll take it! :)

I'll definately bring my 95 in 30-40 Krag, probably a .270 or 30-06 scoped bolt gun and maybe my 336 Marlin in 356 Win if it gets to me in time.

Looking forward to this!

Hope you got into your new house and are all settled - moving is always "fun"...

86er, my earlier post with a couple of questions got zapped by the data base problems so here goes again.

Eariler in the thread mention was made of a $45 "Texas exotic big game license". Is this something different from my resident Texas hunting license which is valid through the end of August?

Also, it was mentioned that for an additional $50 we could stay at the ranch Thursday evening, August 7. I would like to reserve a room for that evening. I live in Canton, Texas and it is just too far to drive down Friday morning in time to make a 6:30 AM hunt.

Looking forward to meeting and hunting with you and the others.

tomclink, the "Texas exotic big game license" is a way for out of state people to come hunt exotics without having to buy a regular out of state license. If you have a valid Texas hunting license it does not apply to you. Hey, didn't know you lived in Canton, I live up by Greenville.

A TX license suffices. Out of staters need to buy a $45 5-day exotic license. Arrival is Friday after lunch. The first hunt is Friday afternoon, then Saturday morning, Sat afternoon and Sun morning (if necessary). If you still want to come Thurs, let me know.
