Couple Shot in TN Church "With An Unloaded Gun"

Man Accidentally Shoots Himself and Wife in Church While Discussing Recent Church Shooting
Tennessee:
A husband and wife pair was accidentally shot in a Tennessee church after discussing church shootings with members of their place of worship.
Elder members of the First United Methodist Church in Tellico Plains got together for a Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, during which they talked about the Nov. 5 massacre in Sutherland Springs, Texas, where 25 people and an unborn child were killed. When someone asked if any of the guests had brought a gun to their church, an unidentified man in his Eighties told the group, “I carry my handgun everywhere,” according to a retelling of the incident by Tellico Plains Police Chief Russ Parks as reported by multiple local news outlets.
“Somebody else walked up and said, ‘Can I see it?'” Parks said. “He pulled it back out and said, ‘With this loaded indicator, I can tell that it’s not loaded.’ ” The man pulled the trigger to prove it was not loaded but he “just forgot that he re-chambered the weapon,” Parks said. After it went off, the gun owner hit himself in the hand and his wife – who is also in her Eighties – in the abdomen. The couple was transported to University of Tennessee Medical Center by helicopter for non-life threatening injuries, according to Parks.
“Just want to let Everyone know that there was a shooting in town today. But it was not an active shooter situation. It was an accidentally discharged handgun,” the Tellico Plains Police Department said in a statement on Facebook. “No other people were harmed in this accident.”
Nearby schools were placed in a temporary lockdown for the students’ safety.

Negligent discharge NOT ACCIDENTAL.

And handing one around is, well, ill advised.

Re: Couple Shot in TN Church "With An Unloaded Gun"
'Safety' features are not always reliable.....
Unfortunately the politically-incorrect nature of 'guns' means so many gun owners don't get their firearms out and train and shoot and handle them enough to be 100% safe with them.
However, the more everyone handles guns to attain the above goals, the more accidental discharges could happen, so there is probably somewhat of a 'bell-curve' where a certain amount of public handling of firearms is optimal, but no more, and no less.
The same would be true of cars, toasters, bicycles, and ladders, however - but "GUNS" is always a 'controversy'.....

Doctors for Sensible Gun Laws
"first do no harm" - gun control LAWS lead to far more deaths than 'easy access' ever could.

Please, *negligent* discharge. Not whacking on you personally, but this distinction grates on my nerves.
(like my people at work who are always saying a telephone call "rolls" over to another line, not "forward"
Accidental is something wrong with the firearm, broken sear, protruding or soft primer, etc.
If you pull the trigger, bump or slip the hammer, or anything involving human interaction where the human is being stupid or ignorant, it's negligence, pure and simple.
Cooper nailed it, if only something so simple could be followed:
-always loaded...
-don't point...
-don't touch...
-be sure...

Re: Couple Shot in TN Church "With An Unloaded Gun"
Pulling out a gun in any public setting is basically a really bad idea. Putting ones hand in front of the muzzle is also a really bad habit. Yes, one needs to do certain things when cleaning that you wouldnt ordinarily do, but as a habit, pointing it at anything you dont intend to shoot is a really bad habit.
Id almost bet his words or thoughts were "Well Ive been shooting for 65 years........" yeah, looks like youve got it all down pat.
Theres a pretty good reason safe handling habits/doctrine/whatever have changed over time, and it wasnt because it was so great in the good old days. Looking at older pictures, even of Cooper, it was common to have ones finger on the trigger most of the time.

As has been pointed out above, we need to always pay attention where it comes to firearms. They are a tool used to propel a mass out of the barrel at high velocity. Improper use of this tool could result in unintended injury to self or others. It is easier to pay attention than to pay an emergency room bill.

Gaah...!
This is why, on our private property, our mostly LE Elders "request" that every Member of our church be vetted by an Elder for Safety before regular EDC attendance.
We HOPE that guests are proficient when Carrying, but we PLAN on the tactical response capabilities of our regular Members... so we train according to Plan.
Three of us on the Board are wanting to do some "in pew" training this winter.
We'll see where it goes...

Re: Couple Shot in TN Church "With An Unloaded Gun"
my Dad told me LOTS of times that more people have been killed by unloaded guns than any other kind.
there is no such thing as an unloaded gun, until it is.
