OT - TV Sellin' Them Drugs - A Mind Trick
I started noticing something occurring again and again with these new drugs on TV.
I am not talking about the regularity with which they make miraculous promises, followed within a year or two by televised class action lawsuits due to discovered serious and/or fatal side effects.
I am talking about the manipulative way that they name their products. At first I started becoming annoyed, then I started laughing as I saw the "me too" mentality of dozens of companies following the drift of their ads.
It would appear that there is something triggered in our brains of trustworthiness, or familiarity, or some type of euphoria when we hear a tri-syllabic word ending in the letter "a." Don't believe me? Think I'm crazy? (Well, I can't help it if you believe the latter - aren't we all, a little bit?)
Okay, I started noting the new drug product names, and some of the ones that have been around for a while. A large ratio - more than half? More than three quarters? - of the "wonder products" follow this goofy paradigm. That is - Three syllables, ending in the letter "a."
Here is proof - if you have a TV or read magazines, you will recognize many of these:
Allegra Cymbalta Dulera Evista Farxiga Humira Integra Januva Jublia Keytruda Latuda Lovaza Lyrica Namenda Nuedextra Oracea Osphena Pradaxa Repatha Reptiva Spiriva Tresiba Trumenda Vaniqua Viagra Victoza Youbetcha
Okay, mebbe the last one is used by my former first choice for Prez.
A little "Twilight Zone" music, please. You is being hypnotized to buy their junk! WARNING WARNING, WILL ROBINSON.

Just listening to the list of potential side effects makes me sick. I wouldn't take any of them.

Re: OT - TV Sellin' Them Drugs - A Mind Trick
I believe in the good old days the drug company could choose the name to be descriptive based on what the drugs actually did. Names like 'Lopressor' for a drug that would lower blood pressure.
Then they began to run out of names and they started having marketing analyst tell them which syllables and letters had the right tone or marketing value for a given product. Most of the names from that era ('Vytorin') sounded like planet names from Star Wars because they had a lot of "power letters" like V and Z.
I believe now they have to choose from a list of words supplied by the FDA, that I know lately most of the names of new drugs sound like the names single ethnic mom's pick for their kids. ('Trulicity')
Piller is probably much more knowledgeable about all this than I am.
As far as the advertisements, I have a voided quite a bit of wasted time over the years because I am lucky enough to have not had a television in the house since 1988. My wife and I were determined that if we were going to have children we weren't going to have a television in the house. We wound up bending the rules slightly by having a television and renting Netflix DVDs as the kids got older; whichever kid did the best job with homework and chores and 'attitude' got to pick next week's Family Movie to watch.
(Of course we were mean parents and these days would probably have our kids taken away, because for instance there were only two kinds of cereal in our house, Rolled Oats and Shredded Wheat. Each kid got to choose, but none of that "Mikey only eats Fruit Loops" kind of garbage. Of course the end result of these things was our kids actually read books and did things instead of watching them on television, and they also grew up to eat very healthful diets without having to stress out about 'being on a diet', because it was just an automatic habit to eat healthful food.)

I like the old tried and true honest drug names like pot, meth, heroin, and crack...names that inspire confidence that if you take them in healthy doses you're going to get messed up... :O
Re: OT - TV Sellin' Them Drugs - A Mind Trick
Yep another thing they do is abbreviate a symptom as if every doctor knows what RHB (recurrent heart burn), CRS (can't remember stuff) or PH (painful hemorrhoids) means. I guess the TV audience has become predominately seniors (baby boomers) that have a need for the drugs, which the ad spends 12 seconds saying what good it does and 48 seconds warning about side effects....

If you really want to get scared, ask at the Pharmacy for the package insert and read it! the things they don't tell you are enough to give a constipated person a bout of diarrhea. As AJMD429 will tell you, the drug company reps are there to sell something to the Doctors and they are not going to tell the Doctor everything. Some Doctors have sold out for the money and will put you on medicines to try and fix the side effects of the other medicine which they keep you on. Then there are the ones who take you off of a medicine when you have side effects because they actually care about your health. Care to guess which Doctor on this forum I would point to as an example of the sort who cares? I have talked with AJMD429 more than any other Doctor on here, and if I lived close enough, I would be going to him.
I receive a lot of flack for suggesting that customers with mild to moderate elevations in cholesterol try diet, exercise, and an increase in vitamin C and take a balanced multiple B vitamin first. Cheaper and easier. Co-enzyme Q10 is made in your body as well as found in many foods. It is necessary for life, but statin drugs for cholesterol cause it to not be made in your body. Statins, in my opinion, should be limited to severe cases and a gelatin cap with liquid CoQ10 should be started immediately. That is just 1 example.

If you do have 'high cholesterol' (which is NOT detected on the tests most 'employed' doctors do, because MOST of us are 'employees' of hospitals which are 'affiliated' with laboratories and funded by insurance companies which punish us with cuts in our reimbursement to below the cost for our services) if we do the correct test, but cut us in on the profits if we do the test they profit on) if we don't do what makes our employer money.
There ARE drugs which do what statins do that IS beneficial (increase hepatic re-uptake of small 'depleted' LDL particles), but do NOT do what statins do that is harmful (HMG-Co-A Reductase inhibition), but they currently list at $7,000/month retail, and will not be off-patent for a bit.
There ARE times when those new alternatives DEFINITELY benefit patients, but physicians seldom use them (except for their own family and friends).
Get your "LDL-P" or "Oxidized LDL" checked, and TREAT THEM if they are abnormal (because unlike the total cholesterol, or 'bad cholesterol' as measured by LDL-C, they DO indicate GREAT risk). Just going to a lame-duck doc who is 'in-network' and tells you what you want to hear, may get you a young death from heart attack or stroke. If your doctor isn't checking LDL-P, or LDL-Ox, and hasn't already looked at your fasting INSULIN (not 'sugar') levels, or hasn't already checked your MTHFR genetics and your Trig/HDL ratio (needs to be well under 4.0, and preferably under 2.0), then you are aren't taking decent care of yourself.
On the other hand, when your total cholesterol or even LDL-C is high, but the LDL-Ox and LDL-P are normal, you may not have a problem at all...
Additionally, like Piller said, there are MANY non-pharmaceutical things that provide tangible benefit WITHOUT resorting to 'statins', or can be used WITH statins to enable a lower dose, better benefit, and fewer side effects.
Finally, when it comes to lipids, if you haven't had your reverse-T3 checked, along with your regular free-T3, free-T4, and NOT just a 'TSH', your thyroid may be CAUSING your bad lipids. In fact, even with 'normal' thyroid labs, some people are clearly in need of thyroid supplementation IF the physician bothers to take the extra 5 minutes needed to EXAMINE the patient and see what is going on. Same for the 'sex' hormones (which do FAR more than 'sex' things); the clinical history, exam, and careful analysis of the lab results can clarify what needs done.
There is a clear role for good 'healthcare', but the bare-bones stuff-care is NOT helpful; learn the difference (and be prepared to prioritize it financially)....!
ANOTHER classic example is like a patient of mine who is herself an Ob-Gyn, and prescribes herself, her sisters, and her friends, 'bioidentical' hormone replacement, but when I asked her what patient-information pamphlets she used to explain the pendulum swing in 'hormone' recommendations over the past decade, her only response was "I don't really get into that with my patients".....I said "...don't you see many menopausal patients...?" because she practices far enough away from me that I don't send her patients, and I thought perhaps she only saw adolescents, but she said "....no - I definitely believe it is the best option - and far safer than not taking hormones, but "...patients don't believe what you say anyway, and it just isn't worth the time you need to explain the pros and cons...". In other words, the SPECIAL people in her life get advised as to what is honestly the safest and best way to approach the third part of a woman's life medically, but BECAUSE THE INSURERS ONLY PAY A FIXED FEE FOR VISITS, the 'employed' physicians just do what you can do in four minutes - tell the patients nothing. Let them just go by whatever they see on television. Let them get twice the risk of stroke and heart attack, and an increased risk of breast cancer, and a lousy sex life, because it is too 'difficult' to explain to them the difference between estradiol, estriol, and synthetic estrogen, or the extreme difference between a medicine taken orally versus topically, or why paying out-of-pocket for something from a pharmacy that BENEFITS them might be better than a 'co-pay' for a medicine that harms them. Or tackling the HUGE difference between micronized (absorbable) progesterone versus medroxyprogesterone - one reduces breast cancer risk slightly if it even has an effect, versus the other nearly doubling the risk.
But go ahead, and see the doctors that are "in-network" and "preferred providers", and limit your horizons to whatever your 'insurance pays for'.

The biggest selling hormone replacement for women is Premarin. It is extracted from Pregnant Mare Urine. Horse pee is what women take for menopause, and they are willing to kill you if you don't give it to them.

Re: OT - TV Sellin' Them Drugs - A Mind Trick
One of my patients is a gynecologist, and when in for her physical, I noted she had prescribed herself a pretty good regimen of 'bioidentical' hormones, and asked her "What patient information pamphlets or other educational materials do you give patients that helps explain the huge 'pendulum swing' when it comes to "hormones" in the past decade or so...?"
Her response was "I don't really deal with that very much...."
Like many physicians, she treats herself for things she knows about, and sees another physician for stuff she doesn't know about, or can't physically do herself (hard to do your own Pap smear), and we often select someone 'across town' who we won't necessarily interact with professionally, just to assure objectivity, and minimize embarrassment if sensitive topics or exams are involved.
So, I don't really send her patients for consultation, and thought maybe she only sees adolescents or something, so I said "Don't you see perimenopausal or menopausal women...?" Her response was sadly symptomatic of what is going on with health care today:
"I pretty much don't bother talking to women about it unless they specifically ask; insurance doesn't pay us to spend time with patients, and even if we do, they tend to believe whatever they see on television, or whatever their hairdresser tells them, instead of what WE tell them..."
Of course, if "we" hadn't lost credibility by becoming mostly salaried 'employees' of hospitals and/or whores working for insurance companies, perhaps our patients might still respect us, and value our services and advice....

As for the real question...there's a lot of power in advertising.
