Buckshot
I bought some of this buckshot about 20 years ago pretty reasonable, it sure seems to do the job on varmints.
Shot two skunks and the Chuck in the last few days, distance was 20 yards or under and the shot never exited the other side and they never move.
Only thing I can figure is it must expel all the energy inside, thoughts?

Re: Buckshot
Those Active shells were great, shame they didn't catch on.
We used to shoot a lot of them on the trap range. However we found that we needed to use a 1 oz wad and 1 &1/8 oz of shot.
As for buckshot not exiting a skunk at 20 yards that seems strange. I'm guessing it might be lower pressure, most OO I shoot will go through a deer at 20 yards.
No matter what buckshot is a force to be reckoned with!

Re: Buckshot
I remember shooting a big fat doe with Remington 2&3/4 4buck , it too was a 27 pellet load.My 870 with 30" fixed full choke throws buck like magic. I hit her with the whole pattern about 30 yards in the shoulder- was like she was pole-axed. Just DRT! Then when we skinned her and we found both shoulders were swiss cheese and blood clots I went to OO to help save some meat.

Re: Buckshot
Pitchy, We always had a flock of sheep around up until 6 years ago so we had the issues of varmits and dogs that like to kill sheep. My dad was a firm believer in a shotgun for social work and # 4 buck was the load of choice. I once shot a newfoundland as big has a bear and it laid him low at about 35 long steps that dog was a known killer of calves, sheep, goats, and ducks. It works great up close and has bad as it sounds Dad used to say if they die today or next week it doesn't matter, just get the pellets into stock killers.
I have been reloading a #4 buck 3" load with only 24 buffered pellets and it is keeping about 12-15 in a foot at 40 yards. I have carried it when calling coyotes in the woods but haven't got to shoot one with it yet.

With my 2 7/8” 10 gauge Buckshot handloads I’ve shot thru deer with #2 , #1 , 0 , 00 , 000 and 00000 . All were pushed with moderate loads of SR7625 . Most shots were 15-25 yards .

Re: Buckshot
I got a nice old circa 68 Belgium A-5 Browning 12 Magback around Xmas . I’ve tried mostly 3” in the gun both buck and slugs . The buck patterns are adequate at 25 yards but the factory 3” slugs do very well out to 50 yards . Oh I failed to mention I got my hands on a Belgium 3” slug barrel and that’s what I’ve been shooting the buck and slugs thru . Last week I ordered 10 boxes of Rem 3” Express slugs the El Cheapos . Eventually I’ll load Lyman 525 sabot slugs in 3” hulls and see how they do as well as 0 buck .

I suppose over the years I've owned a trio of 10 gauge semi auto's as well as a pump all 3 1/2" of course .
At the present I've got a circa 1881 Parker lifter 10 , two Parker top lever hammer 10's , four Parker hammerless 10's , an LC Smith hammerless , Ithaca NID Super 10 , circa 1881 W&C Scott back action hammerless , a Lefever mid grade hammerless and I had a WW Greener box lock hammerless with fluid steel barrels that was made in 1905 .
I'm more intrested in Parkers at the moment and preferably hammerless . I've got a Parker EH 2 frame with 30" barrels that was made in 1889 in about 90-95% original condition , a Parker EH 3 frame with 32" barrels that was made in 1899 , a Parker NH 3 frame 32" that was made in 1890 and recently I got a Parker EH on a 2 frame with factory original 28" barrels that are originally choked cylinder and lite mod . I wanna find a Parker EH with factory original 26" barrels but the consensus say they made less then 20 in that configuration , I'd also like an EH with factory original 24" barrels but the consensus think less then ten were made .
Thanks for the link to the photo thing but as I said earlier after photobucket I have little if any intrest to get invoved in that stuff any longer .

Intresting web site !
Other then my W&C Scotts a Greener and a Westley Richards I suspect I'll be liquidating all my Euro stuff .
When I was younger I thought the epitome of the SxS shotgun was a Brit gun . And I still like them well enough , but after 40+ years of Parker's I've kinda settled . Although my 10 gauge W&C Scott will most likely be put in the box when they get ready to drop me in the ground . That 10 gauge was my maternal grandfathers from about 1946 until he passed in 2008 .

Re: Buckshot
I always thought #4 Buck would make a good home-defense load. More pellets, but they're big enough I think they'd go through ordinary clothing, or if not, would impart a fairly 'distracting' amount of energy...
I run those in my Saiga-12, and they do really well...

I`m sure these are a low power load also, never tried these either and will set up a target at 20 yards and see what the group is.

Re: Buckshot
Short barrel, I'd bet it cylinder or improved cylinder. The barrel should be marked somewhere as to the choke.you might not see the choke designation without taking off the forearm.
If it is an open choke you might be better off with 4 buck, more pellets.
As for skunk loads I prefer a .22 and shoot them in the lungs. They usually don't stink so bad when lung shot.

They are 4 buck, the Activ is 27 pellets and the SB 21.
I used to shoot skunks with the 22 but they run and if close to a building they can get under them and then can`t get them.
In the lungs with the buckshot and they don`t move.

Re: Buckshot
No doubt buckshot works better for instant deskunkifacation!
I dont have to worry about one getting under buildings, i wasn't thinking about that. I was thinking about the possibility of it getting hit in the head and spraying. Personally skunk smell is kinda pleasant but I really dont want or need my dogs rolling in it- It's not that pleasant!!!

Re: Buckshot
Several years ago I read an article about military use of buckshot. Most countries were using the old standard OO load. The British had many years of combat in the jungles of southeast Asia. They finally settled on OOOO buckshot because it gave the highest percentage of confirmed kills because of the number of pellets in the rounds.

Re: Buckshot
I wonder if you actually mean #4 instead of 0000....
I try to keep 0000 buckshot (.375" to .380") for my .36 percussion revolvers....ballistic products 0000 works perfectly....uniformly swaged to .380" and slightly hardened with antimony but they are, more often than not, out of stock.
but....0000 does not stack well in 12 ga. with even the thinnest shotcup....though, if you are only slinging four of them at a time, they might pattern well and a filler of granulated plastic or even a dry cereal porridge mix such as farina or grits might work.....
[/quote]
I cast 0000 (.380”) and 00000 (.398”) for handloading in my double 10’s . I gotta admit in the 2 7/8” shells they don’t stack even semi reasonably until I cut the petals off the SP-10 wads , then use a Mylar .003” wrap . With the 0000i can do pretty well with eight of the 0000 pellets and they pattern wonderfully at 25 yards out of my full choke guns . With the 00000 stuff I go thru the same deal with the wads but only get six of the larger pellets in a 10 gauge 2 7/8” Hull . I failed to mention I put WIN Grex buffer in both . Shot a doe at about 17 yards with the 00000 two seasons ago , the Dow caught all six pellets and all passed thru the heart lung area . Deer rolled forward perhaps 10-15 yards and it was over . So far I’ve not shot the 0000 at a deer but I see no reason to not expect the same . Both sizes are cast from straight wheel weights and water dropped from the mold . I also roll them between a large piece of steel and a piece of aircraft grade aluminum to knock the edges off the sprue cut .

Pitchy,
You are a better man than I. The fact that you had the fortitude to pick up the pole cat top check for pass throughs is beyond me
I have trapped and dispatched several around the home place. The ones down here are the smaller spotted civit cats. They are smaller but still smell bad. Most were shot through the head with a 22 while in a trap and they still stunk to high heaven.

No no no never touched that sucker, scooped it up in the snow shovel and fed it too the foxes.RustyJr wrote: ↑Mon Apr 23, 2018 7:32 pm Pitchy,
You are a better man than I.

Could tell on the ground the pellets never went through.

Re: Buckshot
The neat thing about 97s and model 12s too is they'll hold 6 rounds in the magazine making them 7 shooters. I bought a couple of model 12s recently and took the plugs out today and checked to see how many they'll hold. One was made in 1919 and the other in 1950 so I wanted to verify they both had the same capacity despite their age difference.
