Heavy hunting loads, .41 Magnum?
Looking at buying some 250-grain LFNs or 265-grain WLNs from Beartooth, and lighting them off under Lil Gun, 296/H110 or H4227, none of which I currently have. Anyone have a powder preference for heavy cast in this chambering? I am not looking to redline, just get to an honest 1200 or so with serious accuracy.

Re: Heavy hunting loads, .41 Magnum?
I always liked 296/H110 but then I was using lighter bullets. Mostly 190 grain. I really like the fact that the 41 shoots so much flatter than the 44M.

Paco had an article on loading heavier bullets in the 41 Mag. Todd
PS it’s in the Articles section in the forumn directory.

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

No help answering your question, but I do like the .41 Mag concept, as evidenced by my .411 .405 WCF at 2250 fps.

CRS, since that .405 WCF is much bigger than a .41 Magnum, wouldn't it be more of a Jeroboam?

Piller.
No argument there, but I hate it when I have to reference a dictionary just to answer a forum post.

Alliant has warned against Blue Dot for .41 Mag (and .357 with 125gr bullets)...but, 2400 burn rate is almost the same.PaperPatch wrote: ↑Sat Sep 22, 2018 6:03 pm Blue Dot and 220 grain bullets, make tiny groups...and pack a lot of spank!!!

Blaine, you are right about Blue Dot and the .41. I used available data and Blue Dot for .41 loads in my very first .41 Blackhawk more than 30 years ago, and had some sort of event that locked the cylinder up solid. Sent it to Ruger and they fixed it, despite it being a handload. I had had good luck with that powder in a .44 Magnum.

Yep...I load heavy for calibre .357 and all my 44 mag with BD...excellent results.Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Sun Sep 23, 2018 3:58 pm Blaine, you are right about Blue Dot and the .41. Re: Heavy hunting loads, .41 Magnum?
A Magnum is also a size of Champagne bottle, and a Jeroboam is just a larger size than a Magnum. Kind of like how the .405 WCF is larger than the .41 Magnum.

Re: Heavy hunting loads, .41 Magnum?
215 grain cast over Unique has done fine for me on hogs up to 250 pounds out of 6 inch model 57 and Blackhawk. Have broken both shoulders and bullet passed through on 200 pound boar. Out of 1894 FG 210 grain XTPs shoot better and have worked well on several GA deer shot with them. Loaded over 296.

Re: Heavy hunting loads, .41 Magnum?
My loading notes list 19.8 gr. of H110 driving a 250gr. Cast Performance WFNGC hard
cast lead bullet. OAL was 1.550.
Initial testing put 8 out of 10 in a 2 5/8" group at 25 yards - 5 of these in 1 1/4".
A later test puts 3 in 3" at 50 yard with 19.5 gr. of H110.
This is a VERY stout load. I originally made these up for a moose hunt. 25 shots
in an afternoon is plenty for me. I imagine it'd kill anything it hit in North America
at 25 yards.
Unless I misread it, Paco lists 21gr. of H110 under a 270 gr. bullet in his article here:
http://www.leverguns.com/articles/paco/41heavy.htm. YOW!!!!
YMMV.

Thanks Stretch. These loads quickly do get "rambunctious" in the Blackhawks, especially with aluminum grip frame ...

Wear a welder's mask -- especially if you shoot these loads approaching dusk ...

Even better let someone else shoot them so you can stand back and video the muzzle blast and belching flames

Yes, Bill - yes they do.These loads quickly do get "rambunctious" in the Blackhawks, especially with aluminum grip frame ...
I didn't like the stock plastic grips. Too small and the plastic "checkering" just about tore the flesh off of my right palm.
So, I got some Hogue Mikarta grips. They looked great, but broke after about 10 rounds of the heavy loads. Then
I got a Hogue Monogrip. I think I have the XRED grip frame - anyway, I modified the grip frame slightly to allow
it to work. Fits okay now. The gun doesn't pivot in the hand under recoil, but the grip IS big enough and stable.
Maybe some day I'll carve some custom grips.....
