Neat picture. Looks like they reversed the negative. Unless that's an ultra rare left hand Marlin.

Why did I post Marlin? Duh.................

Looks like the pistol might be a nickle plated S&W New Model #3.
Great picture!

That is a cool picture - I agree with the Winchester 76 guess...

Poor guy must have been really height-challenged. Look at the length of the '76 versus his right leg.

Keep in mind that folks were not all that big in those days. There were exceptions of course, but they did not grow them like we do now.

That rifle also has an abnormally long barrel - looks to be around 30".

Yep, I've gone on tours of some old mansions and ranch houses. They had period clothes on display. Amazing on how much the human population has increased in average height. Even the furniture shows how much smaller they were. My mom had her great grandmothers bed and at 6' tall I could only stretch out on it if I laid corner to corner and then it was still a tight fit.

It gets worse. Visit the Tower of London if you ever get a chance and look at the suits of armor and other implements on display. Folks were much smaller then. They have a couple of suits of armor for folks who were considered "giants" in those days and I would not be able to squeeze into one of them.

I think these young men decided to have their photo taken at the same time with the same guns. It's hard to see the rifle to make sure.

Okay, does anyone have a feel for what the second, smaller pistol is?

That old photo is from a tintype, tintypes came out of the camera "backwards" ie: mirror reversed. This is one reson Billy the Kid was considered left handed....that famous photo of him was a tintype that made it appear that way.

My guess is it's a Merwin and Hulbert Pocket 32?

Heck, I'd say they even wore the same hat! That smaller pistol might be a S&W "Lemon-squeezer" with a long, 7" barrel.
