Rossi 92 with stainless receiver and barrel but
Magazine tube blued, barrel bands blued. Front sight on barrel band, blue screws and blue loading gate. Also has the Puma medallion on the left side and a fixed saddle ring (also left side.) It also has the flip safety on the bolt (as they do now.) .44 magnum. 20 inch barrel.
The wood seems to be dark, like the old Rossi rifles.
How old is this gun? Is $378, tax included, a fair price?
Thanks!!!

Re: Rossi 92 with stainless receiver and barrel but
Sounds fair to me. Not a steal nor outrageous. Mostly depends on if you want it. I would probably get it if the condition is there.
Re: Rossi 92 with stainless receiver and barrel but
44Shooter summed it up quite well. Hard to tell from your description whether I would like that combination of blued and stainless, but that's up to you. Probably worn in, so some of the stoning that new Rossis want may not be needed. You can strip that brown goop off the rainforest mystery wood and get a nicer finish without too much trouble. Sounds like a handy trail rifle to me!

We're they made that way from the factory, or has this one had parts replaced...? Doesn't matter for a 'shooter' but just curious.

Re: Rossi 92 with stainless receiver and barrel but
The screws in the rifle are all blued. None of them seem to be bunged up, suggesting factory screws. The tube the same way. Plus the front sight is on the barrel band and not dovetailed into the rifle. It has standard Rossi rear sight with the rectangle notch.
And the loading gate, also blue, has no marks. I guess factory done to.
Medallion and saddle ring hookup looks like this (but the receiver is stainless.)

Picked up the little cannon. With just factory sights it shoots great using PMC .44 magnum JHPs. That group is from 25 yards.
Notice the blued magazine tube and lever. Even the screws are blued. I just don't know why they made it that way.

Re: Rossi 92 with stainless receiver and barrel but
Looks like made that way. No bunged screws and everything matches. Notice the stock is the old type stocks... Some kind of Brazilian hardwood.
Now whomever owned it before filed the rear sight down so the notch is shallow (actually just right) and at the lowest setting it shoots right on (I was aiming at the bottom of the <> so it shoots maybe an inch high and an inch right. Gonna be tough moving that sight just a itty bitty to the left!)
My other 92 Rossi is all stainless and has a 16 inch barrel. Folding leaf Marbles sight and higher front sight. Loves Winchester white box .44 Magnum soft points. I'll have to try those in the new one this week. I call it 'Shortie'. The new one I'll call my "Puma".
And if all is well I understand one can put a peep sight. For Shortie I can just get a Lyman 66a, but for Puma the logo on the left side forces me to something like this one below! Then add a folding rear sight where the notch is on the barrel (like Shortie has.)

Re: Rossi 92 with stainless receiver and barrel but
Mixmaster. The front sight on the barrel band suggests a pre re-tooling Interarms-era barrel. While theoretically someone could have used the early barrel band/front sight combo on a later barrel, would be highly unusual. You'd really have to prefer the old Rossi style or function over the more Winchester 1892-1941 period-correct later style. Anything's possible but for a project, would usually be the other way around (If anything), ie, adding a later sight and barrel band onto an earlier donor barrel. Post re-tooling, the front sight was placed in the "correct" (original Winchester) location just behind the barrel band (as viewed from the muzzle). Also, the little safety bolt-switch was a post-re-tooling/post-Interarms (ca 2000 or thereabouts) "feature," so it would appear to be a later receiver....have "never" heard of someone adding the later safety onto an early gun...And then, someone liked the earlier Puma emblem found on some Interarms Rossis enough to graft it on a later receiver. Finally, the blued mag tube/stainless barrel mix is not an original configuration--that I've ever seen/heard of in 40 years of this stuff anyway.
An added note...if the barrel is indeed an early, it will likely have an odd (non western) .390 (+/-) rear sight dovetail vs the post-re-tooling. 375" Winchester/standard US dovetail...unless some of the ,390 mindset remained for awhile into the newer guns. NKJ or others can correct me there if so. In any event, the odd-duck ,390 makes for difficult sight alternatives if wanting to keep the same general configuration. Marbles used to make an early Rossi-specific semi or full buckhorn but no longer--for some time now. NKJ (Steve Young) does excellent work and makes a better (than old stock) one modifying out of the old parts. ...but it still won't be a full, heavy (Marbles-grade) full or semi buckhorn...(only so much he can do for an off the shelf unit using the old base...again, NKJ correct mne if wrong there). Some have messed with the dovetail itself (weld fills, shims etc) but there are no ultra easy off the shelf options other than Mr. Young - that I know of.

Re: Rossi 92 with stainless receiver and barrel but
Well, considering how well it shoots, even with that rear sight, I could leave it alone. Just a bit of touch up bluing and maybe on the front sight epoxy a very small brass bead. I just don't know of an epoxy that will be strong enough so the bead does not fall off under recoil and handling.
But it functions perfectly and is slick.... hard to beat that!

Re: Rossi 92 with stainless receiver and barrel but
I did one similar many years ago. But, it didn't have the medallion. I used the stainless parts for this one.Deaf Smith wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2020 11:13 am Well, considering how well it shoots, even with that rear sight, I could leave it alone. Then the blue parts went on a stainless gun. A way to tell if the medallion was added is to look closely to see if the reciever is slightly recessed around it. If you removed it there will be a circular recess about .030 deep for it to set in. If it does have the recess it will be the very first stainless with it I've ever seen
This is the conversion sights I do for the pre-2000 Rossi 92's.

Well it looks like this...
But I see some on the internet sunken in but others not done that way.
This one is not sunken in. Here is one sunken in.

Re: Rossi 92 with stainless receiver and barrel but
I might try "LOCTITE - BLACK MAX ADHESIVE" .. to glue a small brass bead on the front sight.
I think my sight as enough room! Maybe a shotgun bead buffered down.
If any of you have a better way or some idea that is better than a shotgun bead, let me know!
I see ebay has some brass bead (not the whole sight, just the bead!) Marbles Blade Front Sight BRASS Bead .. Insert Part 3/32" & 3/64". Six bucks.
Then round of the edges of the rear sight and cold blue.
Say, is there any heavy spring made that I can replace the safety spring on the bolt? Make it hard to move off safe and just leave it like that?
Thanks!

Re: Rossi 92 with stainless receiver and barrel but
Thought about that but since the front sight is on the barrel band and zero adjustment I'd instead want and adjustable rear sight (Lyman 66a?)
I have my other Rossi 92 with that blanked out safety made by Steve but I'd like to see if I can make the safety work but not flip off and on so easily.
Just a heavier spring.

Re: Rossi 92 with stainless receiver and barrel but
At that price you cant go wrong. Like my Puma.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Re: Rossi 92 with stainless receiver and barrel but
Outstanding.. just outstanding. 25, and I do mean 25 yards from the bench. Winchester White Label 240gr Soft Points. Two three shot groups.
I wonder what the ballistics are from a 20 inch barrel? Some sources say 1850 fps from a 18.5 inch barrel. If so.. excellent!
Now just drift the sight a bit and file it down just a bit.. touchup reblue and then leave it alone!!!
No.. wait, I'll make my own brass bead and use LOCTITE - Black Max! Yea..
